SKANK 14,288
Companies only have a few seconds in an advertisement to send a message that everyone will understand, so naturally they play off of cultural cliches. We know that if you shift the culture, advertisements will inevitably reflect that shift. Look no further than all the corporations cashing in on Pride this month, proof that companies are interested in changing with the times. Like Japan blurring genitals in adult films, banning gender generalizations in advertisements, seems so odd to me.
Benji 20,113
The general presentation of these kind of laws is so clickbaity Don’t ever think of something like this as an actual ban. It’s just putting the government’s stance into words so if the public decides an advertisement takes this topic too far and a broadcaster refuses to remove it, the law would be on the people’s side. There will still be advertisements about the sexes doing cliches, stereotypical things etc... it’s just so people have a leg to stand on when something is offensive. Do we just knock on the whoever-makes-the-ad's door and be like 'hey, can you make this instead? here's a petition... it's for the kids... thnx guys'... This worked... never, and I struggle to see any other way... Before you pop up with 'by supporting business whose practices that are morally aligned with yours- money talks' I hope you understand that's an almost insurmountable feat to achieve - even if you pretend that all big businesses are playing by the book, you'd probably have better luck making petitions... Consumers are not nearly as in control as you seem to think they are... Companies create ads content that consumers respond positively to. Yes, it is as simple as just asking - or even better, responding to progressive advertisements with your support. We are VERY in control, companies scramble like a bitch over slight backlash. Advertisements have been on a progressive trajectory for many years now naturally by the consumer, so this was so unnecessary. It's only going ignite hostility towards progressive messages from those who did not used to care. Democracies like the UK get ugly defensive when they feel forced. Supersonic 49,376
Good. Leaving the advertising industry to its own devices has caused more and more divisive gender roles, especially in advertising for children's toys. There have been several extensive psychological studies, that prove that companies deliberately rely on archaic gender stereotypes and arch-conservative gender roles to market children's toys, in order to influence and shape young people's buying and spending habits from the earliest age. Companies are deliberately toying with the self-perception and psychological development of children for a quick dollar, which is unethical.

Just because people don't take an issue with things, doesn't mean they're morally ok and ethical. Advertisments being on a "progressive trajectory" is just your subjective perception and the problem with this "igniting hostility against progressiveness" just sounds... very North American to me. In Europe, where more government intervention in the economy is common and generally WANTED (especially in contrast to seeing how broken the capitalist system in North America became with no government intervention whatsoever), this pretty much a non-factor and not really... a big deal. The only people slightly upset with this are companies, that now have to come up with something else for once. Matter of fact, there's been an increasing awareness and public dislike of commercials that display gender stereotypes, so this actually seems in line with what the people actually ask for. That is very naive and not at all true... First of all, if you don't see progressive advertisements, there's nothing to respond to, and big companies are perfectly capable of stomping out the competition and have done so many a times... There are plenty of ways consumers can have a product forced on them too, so no, you are very much not in control wether you like it or not... Btw, issuing a public apology on twitter is not scrambling over slight backlash - Pepsi is doing just fine, and they didn't do **** after that commercial... Sometimes introducing laws and letting people adjust is better than waiting it out - at least it yields results faster... Companies don't care, and public - sure some people will get their panties in a bunch, they did when the whole gay marriage thing happened but here we are, and it was a good decision... This isn't really a question of was this a bad decision, it's a question of how we can fine tune it to make sure it does public most good... It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!
