UK bans gender stereotypes in advertisements

Men unable to change diapers; women cleaning while men kick their feet up on the couch; women having trouble with parking: Scenes like these, which play on gender stereotypes, are now banned in British advertisements. Britain’s advertising regulator announced the changes in December, but companies were given a six-month adjustment period before they took effect.

The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority said in a statement that it will also ban ads that connect physical features with success in the romantic or social spheres; assign stereotypical personality traits to boys and girls, such as bravery for boys and tenderness for girls; suggest that new mothers should prioritize their looks or home cleanliness over their emotional health; and mock men for being bad at stereotypically “feminine” tasks, such as vacuuming, washing clothes or parenting.

The guidelines were developed after a report from the regulator found that gender-stereotypical imagery and rhetoric “can lead to unequal gender outcomes in public and private aspects of people’s lives.” The report came on the heels of a few British ads that perpetuated negative assumptions about women, including one for Protein World, a weight-loss drink, which paired a bikini-clad model with the question: “Are you beach body ready?” The posters inspired a Change.org petition with more than 70,000 signatures demanding the removal of the ads.

Ok, but this part is what I actually found the most interesting:
"The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority said in a statement that it will also ban ads that connect physical features with success in the romantic or social spheres"

So it's going to completely and utterly ban the "Sex Appeal Sells" brand of advertisement?!

I mean, I think these ideas are morally good, but the legislation sounds too sweeping and vague to be enforceable.

My old cat is a tough man, but i cant deny the way he bites my hand and he stabs me, he grabs me by my heart <3

I think the use of stereotypes should not be banned. I think commercials can be fun, inclusive and non-offensive even while using stereotypes.

The British are known for their humour so I don’t fully get this.

But it’s nice to see action taken in regards of preventing prejudice. It’s really refreshing to see the younger generations growing up in a completely different environment.

Hmmm the world, to me, is becoming way too sensitive. Women can change diapers and do way more than men. Men can change diapers, who cares? People are looking to basically tell everyone exactly how they can and cannot live by societies standards. It’s not different from the radicals who tell people who they should and shouldn’t love. It’s up to the director who does what.

I mean I am very PC but I honestly kind of don’t agree! Unless it’s like ultra offensive I think public/consumer decision making and backlash is enough to steer brands towards better advertising

I'm actually... surprisingly on board with this - media is good at shaping world view and ads are a big part of media we consume... The only part that irks me is banning sex appeal basically - LET ME ENJOY MY EYECANDY :grr:

Also it's not really a stereotype that people who are physically attractive do better on the job market, and... I can't speak for everyone, but when it comes to relationships, PERSONALLY, good looks help a loooooooot, so...

Now that I think about it, the whole bit about assigning traits like bravery to boys... that doesn't really make sense... Are they going to ban every single instance of it, cuz... sometimes people exhibit traits that are stereotypically assigned to their gender, so... are you just gonna ban all of it... what kind of message will it send to people who are stereotypically their gender?

Welp, guess I won't be uninstalling adblock anytime soon (I don't use it on this site tho, promise :huntyga:)

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

I am all for breaking down stereotypes and progressive messaging, but it should be up to the consumers to take it in that direction. This sets a dangerous precedent. UK citizens need to make it clear that the government has no place in this industry.

Well, how are consumers supposed to do that? Do we just knock on the whoever-makes-the-ad's door and be like 'hey, can you make this instead? here's a petition... it's for the kids... thnx guys'... This worked... never, and I struggle to see any other way... Before you pop up with 'by supporting business whose practices that are morally aligned with yours- money talks' I hope you understand that's an almost insurmountable feat to achieve - even if you pretend that all big businesses are playing by the book, you'd probably have better luck making petitions... Consumers are not nearly as in control as you seem to think they are...

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

You know what I actually agree with this. Good or bad let’s see how it goes. Let’s learn from it. The media/ads has been in control and shape the society as we are for too long. Let’s see how this goes. I applaud the UK for making such a big stand.

This is a worrying direction. Let's just ban everything that is offensive to someone, right? Who is the authority that decides what is offensive and what is not? Political correctness is new fascism. It's interesting to think that also nazis banned everything they didn't like.
