OMonster 14,675 Posted June 15, 2019 Share Posted June 15, 2019 Spoiler Oh man, I hope I don't get dragged for discussing Ava Max - she who this forum wishes to not name After the surprise success of 'Sweet But Psycho', she and her team are *clearly* trying to jump on the crazy / weird imagery evoked by the track - which is totally inauthentic to who she was before Psycho. For example, Ava has made quite frequent referencing to magic and superstition in her performances and on her socials: Spoiler Aside from it all feeling quite inauthentic - I am still excited for a pop album with interesting imagery again. I wasn't a fan of 'So Am I' - it felt like a horrible cliche that painted her inauthentically as some kind of outcast. But, SBP is a great song... one of the best pop songs in years. And I guess it wouldn't be surprising... her outfits have been very high school goth-Beetlejuice since SBP. Unfortunately though I worry the album will be a mixed grab bag of assorted potential hits with no clear aesthetic direction, rather than a cohesive sounding body of work. Her label will want HITS. Dunno if you’re aware but growing up I think she had some leg problems or something, and had to have leg braces, so it’s easily possible she was bullied because of it and felt like an outcast as a result. I know it’s not the biggest example of an outcast but why belittle what she’s felt in the past.
