It seems she believed the stories about her family. She wasn't getting perms or darkening her skin to become a completely different nationally like Dolezal. It's a complete false equivalency. Even if she has ancestors that were native America as her family claim, she is still white. So filling out papers like she is native is very problematic. Warren claimed Native American ancestry based on a family anecdote and then corrected herself when she found out otherwise. Rachael Dolezal was purposely trying to present as African-American when she wasn't, and was being deceptive and elusive when asked about her racial identity by reporters.
