You're right - it was actually a genius decision to strip it all back for Joanne. Each of Gaga's eras have been so visually chaotic (in the best way!) that there was no way she was ever going to be able to elevate that to an effective (shocking, new, surprising) level. In going in a completely different direction, Gaga gave us much less to look at... which, in a subversive way, allowed for the pink hat to become iconic. Through defining the era with one visual, it was easier for that visual to become known and recognised - and that would never had been possible had she given us more looks in the same vein of TF/BTW/AP. The C2C / Joanne / ASIB eras were absolutely needed to strip the canvas before painting more art onto it. Without this break, the world - and us - would've become numb to her outfits. I know it's a microcosm of society, but even a lot of fanbases on Twitter would literally associate the color pink with Joanne. The Joanne visuals were 'iconic' - and not necessarily in a 'yasss, gaga' kind of way... but in a legitimate sense of iconography. The pink hat in particular will be remembered as a key symbol of Gaga's history.
