The gothic makeup didn’t mean anything to you?? What was dark about The Fame Monster, the photoshoot with the dripping mascara?? umm the music... pop ate my heart
Donna Noble 1,752
The Fame Monster is about fear and literally has 'Monster' in the title Whereas Born This Way is more about self-acceptance and freedom and has numerous uplifting songs Government Hooker-eh

Guest
TFM, even though BTW was dark with the elements of face horns, religious imagery and dark topics it still had its light moments (Hair, The Edge Of Glory) and the message of freedom and liberation. TFM had a very dark and gothic undertone.
imnotyourbabe10 6,100
This is such a tough call! What do we consider dark? Or fearful? TFM, to me, is about struggling with the darkness of relationships or concepts (romantic or otherwise -- as each song is about a "Monster" and isn't always a person). BTW, on the other hand, was reported by Gaga as being "What keeps us up at night and what makes us afraid." (Correct?). As such, I may have to vote BTW for darkest. Aside from the visuals and obviously Judas, she dives further into relationships and individualism/identities and the struggles with them (Marry the Night, Scheiße, Yoü and I, The Queen, Edge of Glory, Americano, Hair). Overall, for me personally, TFM is darkest because of the romantic relationship themes. However BTW might be the overall winner, here. EDIT: I saw a good point about how BTW empowers through the darkness but TFM doesn't really offer any hope. TFM takes my vote, then. PS: I totally see how ARTPOP could be considered the darkest, too. The juxtaposition of the vibrant visuals with the heaviness of the messages from songs like Swine and Dope is pretty disquieting.
