A week or so ago, a friend said they'd been thinking about horses and learning to ride them, and that soon later they started seeing ads for horseback riding lessons. They texted no one about it. They typed it no where. They didn't even say it aloud. Just as a joke kinda, I theorized that maybe our phones can pick up our brain waves just like Bluetooth. It's been proven for years every thought creates a unique brain wave, like different radio stations have different channels. NOW THIS COMES OUT AND I'M CERTAIN I'M ONTO SOMETHING. Not only will robots take over Earth, they will read our minds and know our plans to try to stop them. Boom.

i'm sorry but that sounds bullshit. although i only took one course in cognitive science, so i am no expert or anything, i can tell you that our symbolic system or representation as such, both of which you can "simply" call consciousness, have not been solved and, in fact, can never be solved because it is literally thinking about thinking, meaning that you simply cannot position yourself outside yourself or, differently put, project yourself onto a horizon from which you can be excluded to view yourself as "other." 

also, if you approach the cited proposition from the perspective of formal logic, on which all algorithms are based, it think, you can easily see that if every thought is unique and has its own "brain wave" (sounds esoteric as funk, btw; i can only imagine the term used in the context of physical measurement or something), then it is impossible to decode it because there is no algorithmic pattern detailed enough or matrix big enough by which and within which everything can be translated.

Normal algorithms are made in such a way that things that might interest you, are likely to pop up. It's just not probable that AI can read our minds, the brain is still a black box. Otherwise we'd be solving crimes left and right. What's more probable is that your friend has preferences that are similar to the group that the horseriding ads want to reach. It's not a stretch. Facebook and Google have a lot of information based on what we search, what we like and even how much time we spend on different places on the internet or (through Google Maps) where we go and how much time we spend in places. If you're the typical profile that a company wants to reach, then that's probably what's causing this.

Ok I'm all for Silicon Valley skepticism but your phones can't just pick up your brain waves like bluetooth. They implanted these in people skulls for measurements:

So - while you can definitely never be definite about anything these days - it's really unlikely that such technologies are advanced enough to be used by big data companies as of now. And it might not even be necessary for them because their algorithms, though they lack a true understanding of what they're doing, do not forget a single detail of your online activity and are able to make the most insane predictions about your interests, behavior, personality and development that might seem counter intuitive to humans. Before you get scared about mind reading through brain waves, realize you should already be scared of the data mining that's happening in this very moment.

AI isn't "reading minds" so much as it is "following known brain scan patterns and organizing and utilizing the information much more quickly than a human could." How the brain-computer-interface "reads minds" is like this:  it creates a scan of brain activity when the subject (who is hooked up to a noggin full of electrodes) is thinking about how the mouth and throat forms a certain word.

As most people know, different areas of the brain are associated with and "light up" when doing different activities, or even thinking about those activities. Muscle movement is associated with the cerebellum, sight with the occipital lobe, etc. This would also apply on a much more subtle level  to control of all body motions: the movements of individual finger joints, the entire range of facial expressions, and yes, the subtle ways the lips, tongue, and larynx move to form words. Each "word" is not read by the computer, but the way the vocal cords would be moved is predicted, and that is translated with a second program into speech.

This is why the technology only works for people who know how to talk and thus can activate the brain parts to control speech muscles, and does not work for those who have never spoken but can still think words and sentences.  This brain-computer-interface technology could also be used to let people control their artificial limbs.

New algorithms now make the internet smarter than it used to be. It tracks your behaviours and tastes and picks out stuff that it believes will be specifically interesting to you

 

While u may not have searched about horseback riding specifically, you may have other traits and patterns simmilar to that of other people who are also interested in horseback riding

 

It's either that or a pure coincidence. Our technology is not advanced enough to just pick up what ur thinking and if it was we'd know about it this is not something companies could just hide
