4th album curse upon Taylor?

Unless there is a radical change of her musical direction for the rest of the album, I'm afraid this album will not get much love from critics neither will it get award recognition, mainly the Grammys.

I actually don't find that song to be that atrocious, but all the critics panned it to the pits of hell and to think that I thought it had chances of getting a Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nomination or even win... :cryga:

Guess it belongs to Music to My Eyes now. :vegas:

I knew there was trouble when I walked in (this thread) :ally:

In all seriousness, a 4th album curse doesn't exist :saladga: e.g. Sweetener, Bangerz...

I kinda think the 4th album curse exists, not like as a conspiracy tho. If you count the breakthrough album the first one, most of the time the 4th one after the breakthrough underperforms because of overexposure, the fifth one is the image overhaul then the sixth one is the comeback (if the artist is diverse enough to backlash, whoever survived the 5th after the breakthrough will last)

Madonna’s breakthrough was Like A Virgin, the fourth album after it was Erotica which underperformed, then Bed Time Stories then Ray of Light.

We all know about Gaga’s case.

Miley’s first album was Hannah Montana soundtrack so let’s not call that her solo debut. Bangerz was the 3rd after her breakthrough, Dead Petz was the missing the mark album then Younger Now was the change.

Sweetener did underperform, TUN was the change of style.

and I agree with OP, Taylor wasn’t making an impact earlier (at least in Asia). She was just making music that 10 year old girls listen to until Red that made her a household name.

GGD is literally the only group of people I've seen hating this song so much

The GP love it, the fans love it. A bunch of critics who were expecting the old Taylor don't love it.

The 'fourth album curse' is actually a very logical phenomenon in pop culture I think.

It doesn't mean any artist who is going on with his/her fourth album will definitely flop, but rather, the 'first album' is the one that is the most successful, rather than the actual debut album.

It's very hard for artists to maintain that success for four albums consecutively, however if his/her first album did mediocre results, and then their second album exploded, then their 'curse' might actually be their fifth album.

From what I read, the critics wanted Taylor to evolve as a musician and the reviews said it 'offered nothing new' to her discography.

Miley wasn't even trying to be succesful with Dead Petz, that wasn't a problem of overexposure and in what way did Sweetener underperform? :oprah: it sold more copies than DW in its first week and had 2 top 10 hits just like DW for example

I'm not sure what they mean then because she's never done this before :ladyhaha:

This is the first time she's taken a crazy insane concept and ran with it (unless you count ...ready for it?)

Those albums are nothing WW though. She may have had a cute lil' hit WW with Love Story but her true superstar status globally started with Red.

Gaga is bigger WW.

Why does she need to be big WW, tho? She's outselling everyone besides Adele. Her last tour was the best grossing female tour ever - it literally outgrossed all of Gaga's tours combined. Her US slayage is enough to break out all these worldwide stars.

OP: If you think Taylor is gonna flop, you're delusional. The GP eats this song up. I'm sure she won't care whether forum stans will like it or not when she'll have the best/2nd best selling album of the year and go on a tour with stellar numbers.

I was trying to say that 4th album curse kind of exists due to overexposure. It could be the fifth or the third album or whichever. The next 2 or 3 after the peak is bound to suffer from overexposure.

Dead Petz had a whole VMA to shine and Miley was the it girl when it was released. Her intention might not have been commercial success but it surely did underperform considering the huge promo spots. The album is almost unknown out of the pop stans world. And even if you ignore it and call Younger Now the 4th album after breakthrough, YN’s sales also proved the over exposure theory.

Sweetener did have 2 hits but they were no way close to 7Rings’s or TUN’s or Side To Side or Into You’s longevity or cultural impact. With Ari’s exposure, Sweetener really did underperform to her standard.

Im not even trying to argue with you haha. My “receipts” might be arguable but I was only saying how overexposure is a thing.

and I’m not even wanting Taylor to flop. I used to hate her with passion but I appreciate her more now after reputation. I hope she becomes the exception and escapes the so called 4th album curse too.

I agree that overexposure is a thing but the 4th album curse is just a construct made by stans :huntyga: that was my whole point - it isn't a curse if you try to change the facts.

I get what you are say.. The 4th album curse is not about hitting a magical number, it's about the amount time the public spent with a certain artist, the exposure they had, fans growing out of the, the inability to evolve etc.
