The problem I see with this argument is that the US historically had high marginal tax rates until Reagan administration. And ever since then Republicans and Centrist cry every time we talk about increasing them. They were literally slashed & the people at the top benefited from it and they continue to hold those benefits & it’s not trickling down like the American people were told it would.

A lot of countries did

This is the 21st century globalized economy where countries compete harder than ever for investment

If all nations rose taxes a lot on wealthy it would be one thing... But they don't

And US top marginal taxes are already not that far below 50% to begin with in many states (especially blue states like California)

It's not like they are that low now to begin with

That being said I do think the rich can pay a little bit more. I just think 70% is a little over kill. If it doesn't include state taxes even worse cause then the true rate would be more like 80% or more depending on the state

I'm also in favour of modest tax hikes on things like dividend and stock income above a certain threshold

This isn't fair to the students that just finish paying off their debt once this goes into affect tho :triggered:

“The abolition of slavery isn’t fair to the black people who had just been born slaves ugh!”

That’s literally the logic :rip:

The “I suffered through it so others should too” mentality is so toxic and regressive.

In 2016, I think Bernie was advocating for 52% for top marginal tax rate. Do you think this would be reasonable?

It's not the same logic at all

These students agreed to take out loans and they owe back the money they were given

Comparing slavery to a loan u were given is beyond rediculous

It’s the same logic though. The idea that others should suffer through things :rip:

Educations cost in the US is beyond ridiculous. We should be happy others don’t have to owe their souls just to get an education.

@Matangi I'm tagging u cuz for some reason right now the site is not letting me quote your comment :madge:

And I understand what a marginal tax rate is. I'm saying it may be too high tho

It's not the 1950s anymore. The economy is was more globalized now and much easier to shift operations...

U can get big drops in investment and entrepreneurship when u tax the wealthy that high

France tried a 75% marginal tax a few years ago and it didn't workout so well. They ended up reverting back to the old rate (and it was the socialist government that reverted back)

Many business man left to other EU nations, a high profile business man even seeked citizenship to Russia of all places cuz it worked to run his stuff there

You won't collect high taxes from rich if they leave or if they stop investing

thats  just not true lol

It's not. These ppl agreed to borrow money to pay for their education and it was an agreement to pay it back. It's not comparable to slavery at all that's obsurd

U can talk about the current system being flawed and opressing ppl and needing to be changed... But that's a seperate argument

If the plan uses tax money to forgive some debt (or all) and then changes the system for more government coverage I can support that

A one time debt forgiveness alone tho if that's the proposal would not be fair tho. Why should everyone's tax dollars be used to bail out one specific group of students and students before and after don't get off the hook that way?

I am not comparing to slavery. I am specifically talking about the mentality that others should go through things just cause you did.

Because this generation is truly screwed because of student loans. It will help the economy if people can actually buy homes and cars. Student loans are literally holding people back from starting actual lives.

Thoughts on refinancing student loans at a lower interest rate rather than cancelling the loans all together? Example: my subsidized loans had rates as high as 7%. I accepted because I had no other way to get my education. So I accepted because it was either that or work in retail for the rest of my working life making little to no money despite having excellent grades in school. People with VA loans can refinance to get a lower interest rate. I don’t see why we couldn’t implement a policy that would allow students to do the same. I mean. It’s not a personal loan with a 3-5 year repayment term anyway.

I wasn't saying go thru it just cuz others did

I'm saying ur gonna spend tax payers money to bail out one generation basically and not another

Those students that just payed off their loans with a lot of suffrage now are on the hook for new student bailouts too

Ok? We can’t go to the past. We can only move forward.

This government bailed out Wall St. criminals but shouldn’t bail out its own citizens?
