I definitely think it was planned as Venus was released as the original single and DWUW was the promo single, but the plans got flipped. Now we have a video for neither and she pretty much ignores Venus, save for Coachella, and I doubt she'll perform DWUW ever again with the recent R. Kelly controversies.

The ARTPOP era had so much promise if she had been able to carry out her true creative vision and it breaks my heart to think about how much it must have been hurting her for her to have been stifled by the people she trusted. This was the most creative endeavor she's ever attempted, and after seeing it turn out so badly from her management I doubt she'll ever try something like this again. In fact, I think that's a reason why the Joanne era was such a sharp departure from ARTPOP - she was afraid of trying something so wild again.

I’m rather sure that Gaga said Venus was supposed to serve as the birth of a new trilogy. So you’re not that off. Though, I see the Applause visuals as an encapsulation of ARTPOP as a theme and the celebration of classical art and pop culture, most notably silent films, Warhol, Galliano and Botticelli’s.

It was Interscope decision to flip to DWUW, her vision was always Aura -> Venus as 1st and 2nd singles.. she didn't want Applause as a 1st single, but the compromise was that Venus would be the 2nd single, but then DWUW was successful and things started to fall down..

She was soo passionate about this song, and it’s kind of like the scheiße from ARTPOP. Let it flop and move to the third single.

Its not like she was going to have a big hit after applause that era, she was already overexposed and the GP saw her as a mess. Applause was going to be her only hit off ARTPOP let’s be real.

DWUW was a cute hit but it didn’t hit the top 10 after countless performances and high radio play. And it’s not even one of her most memorable songs now.

Venus is good and all but compare it to ScheiBe? Please

I like Venus but I wasn't as obsessed with it being a single or getting video treatment. Could've been cool, but I wasn't outraged that they switched gears to DWUW since, at the time, I knew it was the better song (r. kellys ugliness aside). So it always kind of annoyed me when i'd see fans like ranting about how Venus should have been the rightful second single its like, its not even necessarily single worthy imo, same goes for Aura.

This isn't actually true. Venus was a fan favorite from the get go. And the same amount of fans that find G.U.Y. to be generic or not that great of a track or whatever were present back then. Even though G.U.Y. is a great single and a signature sounding Gaga song. To me, G.U.Y. as a song/single gets an unjust amount of criticism lol

I was on this site when all the polls wanted GUY For the 3rd single. And Gypsy was not far behind.

For the 3rd single and because of its commercial potential, but only because Venus was initially meant to be the first or second single and they'd already passed it up so it wasn't going to be a single. Venus was always more preferred by the fans.

The video concept was amazing, and it would have still had a video if the original visual album concept that Lady Gaga wanted was allowed. As a single, the main issue that I have is that Venus got mixed reactions from critics, whereas DWUW was well liked. I don't think that Venus is bad personally, but the critics views might not have allowed for a very good perspective from the GP. Although, the GP and critics don't always go hand in hand with opinions, so who knows.

She wanted to do what Beyonce did and have a music video for every song, but her team didn't allow it for some reason.
