Support for LGBT rights drops among young Republicans

Support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights has increased or remained steady among Mormons, Muslims, political independents, Southerners, seniors and a number of other demographic groups in the United States since 2015, a new survey found. One notable outlier: young Republicans.

Between 2015 and 2018, support for laws aimed at protecting L.G.B.T. individuals from discrimination fell by nearly 10 percentage points among Republicans under the age of 30. This was one of the key findings from a survey of more than 40,000 Americans’ views on L.G.B.T. issues that the Public Religion Research Institutereleased Tuesday.

The majority of young Republicans surveyed — around 63 percent — continued to support such measures. But given that 74 percent were in favor in 2015, the shift was striking, said Robert P. Jones, the chief executive of the institute, a Washington-based nonpartisan nonprofit.

“It was one of the largest and most significant drops that we saw,” Dr. Jones said.

Understanding this shift would require additional study, he said, but one hypothesis he offered was that the ranks of young Republicans are thinning, with more socially liberal individuals opting to identify as independent. “The Republican Party is becoming more ideologically pure,” he suggested.

I'm actually shocked... staying the same? I wouldn't be surprised. Increase? Frankly I'd be slightly surprised but not shocked, there has definitely been a global shift towards positive views on LGBT+ people. But a 10% decrease? I just can't think of anything that could possibly cause that to happen. Yikes :ohno:

This is discouraging and I'm sorry your country is going through this. I also hope you are all safe, regardless. I know you guys are brave enough to weather any storms of homophobia. This ridiculous phase won't be permanent, although I admit I'm a little scared it will have wider repercussions in the long term, both within and beyond your borders. The world looks to you as an example more than you know.

The 10% drop in support for LGBT Rights happened about the same time Joanne was released. Coincidence? I think not.

Interesting. I thought Gen Z was more conservative leaning so now that they're becoming of voting age, the number of younger Republicans would actually increase. But it would make sense they'd rather identify as independent.

From that last theory, basically, things got better but the Republican party is uglier than ever. wbk

I would imagine it’s because less and less of us who are socially liberal(read: sane) are sticking with the party.  At this point, I feel like I’m only sticking around to help primary out the worst of the crazies.

I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.

Read the last paragraph people :laughga:

it may also just be that the amount of young Republicans is decreasing because more progressive young Republicans don't identify as Republican anymore, leaving only the more conservative young Republicans.

Inter-group and intra-group divisiveness has been destroying us these last several years.  Blame it on T**mp, the extremists on both sides of the aisles, I dunno.  We've lost a middle ground to come to the table to talk and share ideas.  Westernized societies are screwed in that it seems they we were socialized/trained to not have intellectual, respectful conversations about very difficult topics (sex, religion, politics, death, marginalized groups, and so forth).

We need a good does of humanism and reject the vocal minority that is entrenched in racism, various phobias, nationalism, etc.  I have a hunch that people are waking up to the fact that life is inherently meaningless and that triggers their "terror-management"/ "death anxiety" about their mortality and, as such, we've created institutions and economies that glorify immortality projects (having kids when the world is going to climate hell, "I shop, therefore I am," dogmatic religions, etc).

For clarification's sake, I should out myself as one of the extremists I am critical of above -- while I'm not a hypocrite (I talk about these issues respectfully with people), I do lean utopian in  Marxism, Anarchism and Democratic Socialism (these ideologies all espouse different views, I'm aware...but I appreciate reflecting on them and encouraging their incarnations in making the world a better place).
