O sorry, you're right, but still, 1 view was like 5 times more valuable then it is now..

Yeah I agree... I think once when I saw statistics I saw that only 5 videos released before 2010 have hit 1 Billion or something like that which includes bad romance

Because its not as big as Poker Face or Bad Romance? So it's more likely to be thrown under the bus? Lol

It would have been unstoppable if Radio had backed it like it should. So, yes, I think Shallow is her biggest hit now.

Cher had plenty of hits before Believe. 3 1# songs before it.

And I don't see how the fact that Sorry had a sample contradicts the fact that was successful. Hung Up  and Sorry were Madonna's comeback hits and made a lot of year-end charts, regardless of circumstances.

Cher may have had 3 #1 songs before Believe but Believe demolished them all. That's like the OP saying Shallow is Gaga's biggest hit. Even if it isn't, it already surpassed BTW (#1 in the US and WW) just like Believe surpassed Cher's 3 #1s. It's exactly the same.

Get it? :trollga:

No, I don't get it.

There are two situations:

1 . Song A (the original biggest hit) is bigger than B (the comeback hit).

2. Song B (the comeback hit) is bigger than  Song A (the original biggest hit).

So we agree than Cher's case is situation is 2  therefore you said we can't call it a true comeback. But you also say that Shalow is bigger than Poker Face which puts Gaga in the same situation as Cher but you consider it a comeback.

And Shallow is not bigger than Poker Face yet.

Ok, I never talked about any comeback but if Cher's Believe is bigger than any of her previous singles then it IS a comeback. Like what are you talking about?

I'm just saying that just because Cher had #1s before Believe that doesn't mean Believe isn't her biggest one. Just like Shallow potentially surpassing Poker Face would still mean Shallow is her biggest hit.

And a comeback is a comeback whether it be a song bigger than any previous one or just as big.

You are forgetting the biggest and most surprising comeback - Cher.

Hung Up and Sorry were some of the biggest worldwide hits of their respective years. US payed them dust but smashed Europe so I think they are on Madonna's oldest hits level or at least close to them.

Indeed. Believe was HUGE, and is still the biggest selling female single of all time in here in the UK!

I'd say that Believe was Cher's international breakthrough

Arguably, since Believe was so much bigger than her previous songs, it could be considered her breakthrough as opposed to her comeback. She also had some pretty big songs in the US that became pretty well known worldwide (Shoop Shoop Song, If I Could Turn Back Time). To consider something a signature song, it doesn't rely on chart data, since a signature song is their best known or most iconic, not most successful. Therefore, personally I'd consider either Believe or Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) to be Cher's signature song.

OT: Shallow will not become Gaga's signature song, however it may become her most successful song. For something to be a signature song it must be an iconic or closely related part of an artist, which is in my opinion, Poker Face or Bad Romance. Especially BR due to the 'rah rah' intro. Imo, we'll see in the next couple of years if Shallow remains as iconic or if it gets somewhat forgotten like Alejandro or Applause. Imo, Shallow has the success and commercial success but possibly not the iconic/pop culture ingrained factor that some of her previous songs have. My ranking for her most iconic/signature songs would be...

Bad Romance > Poker Face > Born This Way > Just Dance > Shallow

My ranking for her biggest hits/successes would be...

Poker Face > Shallow > Bad Romance > Born This Way > Just Dance

Numbers don’t mean much in the end. There are plenty of #1 songs and mega hits that nobody cares about or remembers anymore, and there are plenty of songs that weren’t as commercially successful that are more well remembered. It’s not about numbers, it’s about cultural impact. Almost all of the classic Gaga hits affected popular culture and mainstream society in some way. Whether it was through a music video, a live performance, the subject matter, or just being highly controversial, songs that actually make people think and inspire them (or piss them off) are the ones that people remember.

Shallow hasn’t had a true pop culture moment. You can’t trace the song back to one single event or occurrence that will forever ingrain the song into people’s minds, unlike Born This Way, or Poker Face, or Bad Romance, or Judas, or any of the other classic Gaga hits. The song isn’t revolutionary or subversive or individualistic in any manner.

Okay, I'm done with people saying Judas wasn't successful. It debuted in the top 10 in 20+ countries and reached the top 10 in 30+ countries. more than LoveGame and Paparazzi. It just had bad longevity.

I feel Shallow is definitely in the top 5 in terms of success. I feel its #3 or #4. Poker Face and Bad Romance are definitely in the top 2, but Shallow reached #1 in more countries than Just Dance, however, Just Dance sold more and had more longevity, for now. I think BTW is #5 since it hit #1 in a lot of countries, but the longevity is not there.

Yeah but it fell off the top 10 like instantly

I agree with that u said about cultural impact being a factor in songs being remembered

But some commercial success is also needed for ppl to remember it

I don't think any of the GP really thinks about Judas like ever anymore tbh
