Because that way it WILL include disadvantaged blacks anyway but also include other disadvantaged ones for other circumstances too

If we really wanna move beyond racism than we shouldn't even be segregating targeted economic help by race... We should make it generic for everyone

If we create a national plan to help disadvantaged ones, no worries because it will include black people anyway. But it shouldn't be about that race or this race

I agree, and opportunities like I've described would benefit more than just black descendants, but go to help educate impoverished areas as a whole. Some of the disconnect we may be having though is that things are much different here in America than they may seem on the outside looking inward. Race is still a huge factor in who succeeds in our country.

I don't get why you had to add a "but" and make it seem like there is still disagreement or that the is something that @Economy  isn't getting. I also may be looking into this from a wrong point of view.

Well the reason I added it was because there seemed to be a disconnect between how race was tied into reparations. He's saying that some people aren't 100% black and that that somehow improves their situation financially. Race is still a heavy issue in the south of the US & it can be hard to see even from a northern state of the US, so I'm sure it's just that disconnect and not a misunderstanding that Economy isn't getting per se.

He is stating that it will be hard to determine who gets monetary reparations based on race if that is the route these politicians are thinking of going to help the black community. There are descendants of slaves who have intermixed with other races through time so I'm sure there is going to be people who look white and may have white family members but they might have black slave ancestors... Will those people get reparations too? This conversation is just going to bring one big mess of confusion for a lot of people.

Well, that all depends on the type of reparations given, but if it's opportunistic as we were discussing, it would be more geared toward impoverished cities & counties that have a history with slavery. It would benefit everyone in that area, not just those of certain skin color.

It's not about skin color, of course, it seems like a conversation geared towards racial identification. I'm headed to bed. Have a good one.

Some much more than others.

I support affirmative action in the increased opportunities sense, not handouts.

The debate on reparations aside, she is never going to get elected. She comes off as so radicalized that most of the left will end up against her as well as the right. I honestly agree with a lot of her views but can’t take her seriously because she runs her campaigning so badly it makes me nervous how she would ever handle being president. The whole point of campaigning is to get the American public on your side to vote for you and she blatantly ignores it.

What do you think is radical about Elizabeth Warren?

I personally don’t find her to be too radical at all, like I said, I agree with many of her points. But it seems to be the popular idea that she is quite radical and headlines like this really only help reaffirm this (the original headline only said Elizabeth Warren supports reparations not the discussion of them). Just look at how her words are twisted around or misunderstood on this level. Her campaign is really being more-or-less controlled by the media’s view on it and it makes it seem messy tbh. We saw what the right did to Hilary Clinton in the media, I don’t think Elizabeth Warren stands half that chance.

People should move on.

Slavery was a part of every culture. The West had many abolishment movements and eventually forced many Middle Eastern countries to abolish it.

I don’t think I should get paid for what my great grandfather went through. Bringing all these stuff up only create more tension and more hate.

This is why Trump will be re-elected.

Democrats are becoming crazier and crazier even for my taste and I'm liberal.

That's part of what I was saying because yes there's been mixing and part of your family may have been slaves but part of them haven't been. So are we supposed to calculate their share based on their genetic percentage that is black? What if they don't even look black? :deadbanana:

But my bigger point is that with the time that has passed by already, some families have broken the cycle more than others. Some black families still have remained poor every generation since slavery while some have broken the cycle and as a result some blacks are no longer born into poverty and they have an opportunity to go to college and are not affected by some ongoing cycle from what happened 100+ years ago anymore

The more important point I was making was that each individuals situation varies. Some individuals and families still have a strong lingering negative, effect on their opportunities due to slavery, some just a little bit, and some no longer at all. Blacks born in wealthy families that can pay for their tuitions and stuff is not that rare now

So my point is it would be impossible to calculate how much damage a black person from this generation is still feeling from past generations in their families pain because enough time has passed that each family has had a unique journey of repairing themselves since

That why reperations at least if they were to be of financial nature, would never work... There's no way to calculate it in a fair way

What’s so crazy about wanting to start a conversation to make reparations for a community of people that have been oppressed since they were forced into this country through slavery? Warren never even went into detail about what those reparations would be, so let’s not jump the gun here perhaps?

Reparations is a bad word in politics. Conservatives have convinced everyone, even so called "liberals," that it is unrealistic and somehow bad to provide more equal opportunities to communities that have been devastated by slavery, Jim Crow and systemic racism.

As a white male, I’m going to give my opinion but (please don’t burn me at the stake for it), I don’t support reparations in terms of cash payouts to ADOS. Because while the cash payout will be a good thing to do, the system and all other factors remain the same. I think what we should do is provide an economic stimulus to ALL poor individuals and those shackled with student loan debt Etc as well as changing a system that disproportionately affects POC (redlining, interest rates, loans etc). All loans for POC could be refinanced at rates for whites. We could provide incentives and Lower barriers of entry to high quality colleges and universities as well as funding those who are under funded. When we’re doing all of this, this means we release non-violent offenders from prison and provide education and opportunities for them (also restoring their voting rights). We also need to decriminalize the possession of weed. When we do these kind of investments, their economic payout will be much larger than an agreed upon cash payout. It will also be a sustainable form of reparation in that you can spend money, but you can’t take away ones education, skills or experience.

When end we do all of this, we can bring all of our people out of poverty and give them an opportunity to live with dignity. We have a moral obligation to our fellow Americans to help one another.
