It really sums up one of the overarching themes of the film that still stick with me. You know, "what really is authentic?" NYT has fantastic reporters and writers. It’s the reason they’ve been winning Pulitzer Prizes annually for a century now. Particularly during these times of incredibly brazen mass misinformation and propaganda, I’m beyond thankful there are still reliable journalists who contain the ability to analyze and interpret anything from politics to pop culture, rather than lazily reporting a SparkNotes version of half-baked information. Actually, Dianne said they put that line in there because it was fun/flirty/a bit ridiculous but didn’t expect it to be called out in the movie. She found out for the first time when she watched it. YourWhiskyMouth 4,014
Without getting too overanalyzing and social justice warrior minded, the song in the context of the movie really does touch on patriarchy in the music world. Jack’s hyper-masculinity and chauvinism are on full display when he sees her succeeding with music that isn’t what he likes and what he sounds like as a rough and tough country cowboy rocker type. I think Mariah said it in the past that audiences have a problem with seeing any musician other than a man strumming an acoustic guitar and singing with unfiltered vocals as being a “good musician” or writer. I truly believe if LG was a man, she’d already widely be considered amongst or surpass legends like Paul Mccartney, Bob Dylan, MJ, Bowie, etc.
CannaeDrive 3,412
Just shows how great the sound track is, every song has something unique and a specific meaning inside the movie. Everyone can find a song that suits his tastes and comprehension of the movie. StressedOut 653
I absolutely adore the dialogue that this song caused, it was a very divisive song both in the movie and IRL, many of my friends hate it and the other half is in love. The divisiveness truly does stem from her becoming this pop persona when before she was so "stripped down" and "authentic", this is where ASIB I feel like gets very meta because the shift in Ally that they are portraying is reality for people that want to become stars. Anyway, Why Did You Do That? is banger. The end.
