SharkmanthaC 114,691
Spielberg thinks Netflix should earn Emmys, not Academy Awards: Since Netflix began distributing movies, the industry has been rife with contention about whether such films deserve the same recognition as traditional, theatrically released films, particularly when it comes to the Academy Awards. Evidently, director Steven Spielberg is firmly of the mind that they do not. “Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie,” he told ITV News. “You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar. I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.” https://variety.com/2018/film/news/steven-spielberg-netflix-movies-oscars-1202735959/ Netflix responded via Twitter: What's your opinion? she/her/hers
Pray4FameGa 3,141
Nice try Netflix. Subscription costs way more than a cinema ticket though.

Imagine wanting to see several movies in a month but your income is low, you have 3-4 kids and a partner. Netflix Subscriptions are ultimately cheaper and you can get more movies out of them! ⟡ ⋆ ˚。⋆🦢⋆ ˚。⋆⟡
KatieJudasGaga4 67,907
I disagree with him. If its a movie, then its a movie, it doesn't mean its a TV Show if its in Netflix.
andy232000 11,695
Sounds like he’s just not in agreement with the way netflix is changing the campaigning game. Netflix films basically go from studio to home and get rid of all the fancy thatre release (from which Academy Theatre owners get profit), Doent do dvd releases (From wifh Academy Member distributers get money) and dont do typical over the rop campaigning like red carpets and bribing (From which the Academy gets money and publicity) i will however, agree that Netflix would destroy the typical and historically long cinematograohy pattern that basically brings people together. It destroys the social activity and convention that is going to see a movie with someone else. It gets rid of box office and critics etc...but at the same time, times have changed. And a good movie will go viral anyway.

Zander 14,910
He just doesn’t like the fact Roma swept award season. I’m sure if he did a successful Netflix movie he’d think differently about it. Times have changed and he should probably get with it a bit more. EDIT: I know Roma wasn’t made for Netflix, but it was put on there 2 weeks after it’s limited release. LilMonst3r 5,540
Somebody still wants to be making billions on overpriced movie tickets. $15 for tickets really is too much for a movie in my mind. Then when the movie is released on DVD or digitally they cost like $20 or $30. I would love for theatres to give a manufacturer discount if you watch the movie in theatre's to save money on the DVD. NotNightwing 1,677
He is just clinging to the old because he doesn't understand how the world is changing. If you watch a movie that came out in cinemas at home is it no longer a movie? What part of the experience of a movie theatre is critically needed for a film to be a "movie"? The crazy prices? Crowded area? The only good things about a movie theatre are the large screen and sound system. Both of which can be replicated anywhere by anyone. It is pretty clear what defines a "movie" and it has nothing to do with the corrupt film industry or its distribution platform. Movies from streaming services are every bit as valid as an art form.
