the tragedy was that btw wasn't that great of a song but the message behind it and the madonna comparisons made it very relevant and popular at the time.  BTW album had great songs that catered to the GP like EOG and Y&I and ...well that's about it really. maaaaaybe heavy metal lover could've got by.   the rest of it would've left non-gaga fans thinking "wtf" .  which is sad but true.  it was a very experimental album and not a lot of it was radio friendly or mainstream due to either what she was singing about on the song or the overall sound of the song.  definitely one of my favorite albums of hers.  government hooker, schiebe, heavy metal lover, Bloody Mary, judas, and more are some of my gaga favorites.  but this album pulled her far away from mainstream consumption.  it is tragic because her talent deserved to have been more recognized at this time.

Tbh, I love BTW way more now than I did when it was released. I though it was a bit cringe.

The video is amazing! but no one gives a fvck about it.

Why are people saying that she shouldn't have released Judas, but yes to You and I, when You and I flopped more.

You and I flopped more than Judas? :toofunny:

Judas was part of the reason radio started hating her. The song was too "blasphemous" for America. I love the sing but it didn't need to be a single. It peaked at #9 solely because of radio. She had amazing sales. So basically what radio has done with Shallow except they were playing each one of their singles before. Judas was when they stopped.

Even charts wise, it went #6 whereas Judas barely cracked Top 10. You could say Judas is why radio was so hesitant about all her following singles other than TEOG.

Also, Gaga seems to have a weird connection with You and I. She lists it under one of the songs that changed pop culture forever. It's obviously not literal but probably what it means to her.

Judas peaked at #10. And yes it did. You and I only charted in the top 10 in 10 countries while Judas hit the top 10 in 30+ countries. You and i couldn't even manage to chart is some countries like Judas did. You and I was only bigger in the US. And Judas peaked at number #10 because of sales, it had huge sales in the beginning and it only had 2 days of tracking and managed to hit #10.

And that's the thing - it didn't maintain the momentum because radio didn't support it and because it was mostly the fans who were excited or the GP intrigued by Gaga who wanted to buy it because she had created a controversy and because part of it leaked.

About international success, I'll concede - it makes more sense. You and I has a very American sound too. It's also the 4th single of the album and latter singles don't typically do as well as earlier ones do.

IMO, Judas could have stayed a cute promo single. Between its songwriting being extremely similar to Bad Romance, radios boycotting it, and countries banning her for it, it just wasn't a great decision. But there is no way she could have known. You only see these things looking back.
