it's almost been two years since the iconic show premiered on Netflixx (March 31st 2017)

Love it or hate it, this show was a massive cultural and social phenomenon back in 2017

People praised it heavily for mental health awareness and on other important social issues, while it also drew a lot of criticism and controversy over the representation and depiction of self harm and mental illness, while others were not comfortable with the show being so accessible to youth due to the extremely graphic and disturbing content.

It Returned for a second season last year, ending with perhaps, the shows most controversial episode yet, also bidding farewell to the shows center focus, Hannah Baker

It Is Returning for a third season this year, will you be watching?

What were/are your thoughts on the show 2 years on?

My verdict: The show is terribly executed in displaying mental health correctly, however that being said, it can be very difficult to get it right, especially considering that they relied on a novel for the first season. So the show is indeed problematic but I will be watching season 3 just because it's emotive and entertaining tbh. I know that I'll be depressed for about 2 weeks after finishing :ladyhaha: but it is very binge worthy and captivating

therefore I'd rate it on the poll as being "good" giving it a rating of:

7/10 or 70%

Spectacular:firega:

Idk why but I loved it so much. It’s very bingewatch worthy like you and I felt very connected to the characters.

I felt so depressed after the finales of both seasons tho:messga: cried my eyes out. Both were so cruel but especially 2 was hard to watch...

REALITY

I like the show. I didn't think Season 2 was as good as Season 1, but I'll still definitely watch Season 3.

I just couldn't listen to this song after season 2, it just made me so depressed lmao

But then it turned into a meme which ruined the songs emotive power:ladyhaha:

Omg same, but at the same time it felt so good listening to it because of the fond memories they shared. Same with Back to You, it’s not that special of a song but I just love how it reminds me of the show:kara:

Also I’m glad I never saw that meme because I started watching the first season right before season two came out:ladyhaha:

I can't find any videos on it but basically It was a compilation of people going about their day, then the slightest inconvenience happens like dropping a pencil, then the video goes black and white and that song plays but just the "oooooooooooooo" in the beginning:ladyhaha:

a bit like "when they ask you how you are and you have to say that you're fine but you're not really fine but you can't get into it because they'll never understand"

I didn’t watch season 2 because I lost all my interest after the first episode but would you mind tell me what happens in this very controversial ep? :selena:

Season 1 was very good. but season 2 was just a recap of season 1 and I think only the last episodes were good. Im still not sure if I liked the ending or not. I thought the second season would begin with that boy running amok and it would be about everybody else to cope with the loss- talk about prevention, weapons etc. Seeing what the kid went through.

But this is highly controvercial. This could easily be missinterpreted as a glorification of amok. Its a hard topic to film. Anyways this was my not very well thought about expectation of season 2

still season 2 was overall really boring to me. Hope season 3 is not the same because honestly they just could have stopped with the show because it was perfect and now they going downwards with the story. Instead of repeating and chewing it over and over they should have gotten to a new story branch. Imo the series is about social, mental health issues. There are plenty. Maybe people can feel along and it will help em. Like watching comming out videos on youtube, if anyone did that. I think you know what I mean.

What I also liked were the songs. „lovely“and „the night we met“ especially

Spoiler

in the final episode, tyler (the photography nerd) got severely beat up in the bathroom by bullies. They smashed his head into the glass mirror, slammed his head on a concrete wash basin and then shoved his head down a toilet. then they got  broom and sodomized him, it was the most disturbing tv/movie scene I've ever seen. Then he gets a gun and attempts to shoot up the school

This show sucks lmao. Effortlessly exploitative and the writing was abysmal. Season 1 was miserable but at least it was addicting to watch. Season 2 was dumb and boring, with one of the worst season finales of anything I've ever watched. Nothing but cheap shock value.

I do NOT recommend it to anyone suffering from depression/suicidal thoughts. Especially since they literally show a girl killing herself (against the advice of mental health experts btw).

So basically the new ‘Hello darkness my old friend’:ladyhaha: Glad I only know that version (and the Katy one) so the song stays unbothered:ally:

misunderstood

I loved it and I find the hate for it to be unoriginal and stupid.

People who say eXpLoiTiVe are really ****ing stupid to me

I say that as someone who has truly felt ****, I don't get how it's eXpLoTiVe.

Not everything has to be a social justice festival darlings.

I like the show. I do think it achieved its goal of getting people to talk about suicide/mental health more. I have some issues with a few things in the show but I think the biggest issue I have is teenagers (and some younger) watching this by themselves. That isn’t the show’s fault, but this should have opened a discussion for parents.

The book is really good. I read it like 10 years ago.
