But honestly, ASIB, the OST (and “Shallow,” in particular) resonated more with me emotionally than any movie (or music) I’ve seen/heard in ages, and it’s honestly not just because of Gaga. I still remember the residual feeling I had the next few days after having first seen ASIB, because I was so deeply impacted by the way mental health and substance abuse were depicted, and had quite a visceral reaction to seeing it portrayed so accurately. I’m a psychologist by profession, but more importantly, the immediate loved one of several mentally ill, suicidal and chronically substance-abusing individuals (I can still recall, with perfect clarity, being eight years old and hearing that the flight wherein my father was a passenger for an international business trip, was forced an emergency landing due to a suicide attempt on board—his. Unfortunately, he’s only deteriorated further since). Anyway, the movie ending the way it did only compounded the rollercoaster of emotions I embarked on as a viewer, with the formerly insecure protagonist, although obviously now utterly broken-hearted by the trauma of losing the one she loved to mental illness/suicide/addiction, nevertheless wrapped up the story not by focusing on Jackson's tragic passing (and “star” subsequently fading), but rather on a new beginning for herself, (with the final upclose shot of her gazing into the camera straight-on, conveying complete confidence and ownership of her pain, talent, and stardom), added yet another layer of emotion to the film for me personally, as even within the throes of tragedy, she nevertheless personally triumphed by finally having had the courage to go after her dreams, and achieving them, despite having been rejected repeatedly and facing substantial personal trauma in the meanwhile (which obviously is also a parallel to Gaga’s actual life, thereby making me even more emotional as she gave the “never give up” part of her speech). Ugh, ASIB honestly deserved Best Picture. Also, this post was conducted via speech-to-text, so I sincerely apologize for the wall of tangent that’s happening up there. I might have actually created the longest run-on sentence in history.

Who cares what they say? Gaga is seemingly aging in reverse, both physically and professionally (I.e., seemingly becoming more talented with each passing year, and now officially reached her second prime of worldwide domination, wherein most other artists don’t even have one era remotely as successful as she’s now experienced twice, a decade apart). In contrast, I think the real Madonna died like 30 years ago. At least, that’s what I have to tell myself, as my brain simply can’t compute that the same artist could release both “Like A Prayer” AND “Bitch I’m Madonna” as singles.
