I think it's kinda short-sighted to call "Joanne" her most personal album to date. Pretty much everything she does is very personal and revealing, even if that's not obvious. It deserved the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album over Ed Sheeran. From the title track to the first single, from DIC to SP, the album is cohesive yet versatile. It's because they are seeing her as a singer/artist, that doesn't need anything else to shine, only her voice. Don't get me wrong, I love the Gaga from BTW/ARTPOP, but I think that the music (which is the most important) was shaded by her image/character. People consider the acustic/rock music more raw and honest, because it's simple, the voice and message are the most important. For example, I love Bloody Mary (one of my favorite tracks from BTW) and Judas, both have an outstanding production, but to me is more easy connect with Joanne (song), Angel Down or Million Reasons, because they are honest tracks, you only focus on Gaga's voice and in the lyrics. Just a personal opinion. Regarding people being distracted by her costuming, yes you're totally right. However - it's not her problem that the GP wasn't willing to look past that and see that she's always had a great voice. The reason she has so many fans is because we could see she had BOTH the voice and the image. If her goal is to be more commercially successful then yes she should keep the boring image. But if she wants to evolve as an artist she should be improving both her music and her visual art, not just scrapping thr visuals because some people don't get it. I wish that she would try to keep those deep thoughts in her music but with more intricate production. Sad dance songs are my favourite type of songss and gaga is great at those. I don't necessarily think you need to strip down your sound to be reall. Sometimes it's way more interesting trying to decipher what's hidden in a pop song then getting it all handed to you. But in my opinion she didn't go far enough for it to be extremely deep and personal. I think she and the label were to afraid of alienating her fans and the music sounds a bit neither here nor there.
