Why Joanne is Gaga's Best Album

Throughout Gaga's career she's always conveyed her personal feelings and struggles through her music. The Fame and its followup, The Fame Monster, were about her experiences with celebrity and that culture. Born This Way was about accepting who you are. All of these themes are very personal to Gaga, and in my opinion, gave a deep look at who Lady Gaga was. This brings us to 2016's Joanne. Gaga poured her heart into this album, making it a tribute to her late aunt. The songs on this album continuing the themes of putting her experiences, personal struggles, and beliefs into her music. But, what I feel separates Joanne from her previous work is that with the music on Joanne being stripped down, so was the person telling it. While her previous work gave me an amazing look into who Lady Gaga was, with Joanne, I finally got to know Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. By stripping down her image, we as the listeners, get an inside look on to Stefani's life as Lady Gaga. This is why I believe Joanne to be the best of all of her work. Also the same goes with the music itself, by stripping down the music, we see Stefani's lyrics and hear her amazing voice, as if we have never heard it before. As she sings in the piano version of Joanne: "Call me Joanne".

Also, don't get me wrong, I LOVE all of her previous work, I am by no means saying that it is bad. In my opinion, all of Gaga's albums are masterpieces, my favorite just happens to be Joanne and this is why.

Also just a quick note about LG6:
I heard some rumors that LG6 will be very similar to the A Star is Born Soundtrack. While I try not to trust rumors, I do think this would be a good idea if true. Gaga continued her work with Joanne in A Star is Born, but instead of diving deep into herself, she did so with Ally. A Star is Born is Ally's Joanne, a strip down of everything to give you the true emotion Ally is feeling. If Gaga continued this deep exploration like she did for herself in Joanne, and did for Ally in A Star is Born, by LG6 she would have mastered to perfection the art of character exploration and will be able to make her most personal album to date, letting us know Stefani even more.

Thanks for reading this lol:kiss:

I decided to listen to Joanne two nights ago and the experience was great. It’s a great album. A very cohesive one too. However, I really can’t put anything above The Fame Monster. I just can’t. But after listening to Joanne again, it went from being my least favorite Gaga album to my 3rd favorite one.

That's true but that can come later.

She really doesn't ever do the same thing twice in terms of albums. ASIB is also very different from Joanne, sound wise and style wise. While she dove a lot into Ally's character which also led her to dive into her own, you can see the Gaga bursting out of her since early 2017. She has been trying hard to channel her inner Gaga and I think this time Stefani can wait and Gaga can come in music.

I will never understand the hate that Joanne gets.

It will go down as one of the greatest albums of all time.

I totally agree! I was more referring to the approach to the album, I would love to see her dive into herself via the classic Gaga that we all fell in love with!

Joanne is truly her underrated piece, it’s part of my holy trinity with The Fame Monster and Born This Way

Joanne was certainly a step in the right direction. It (along with C2C) shifted her focus on music that better showcases her vocal abilities.

I personally hope that LG6 will have a vibe similar to that of Sheryl Crow's sophomore album.

Although, I know this won't be a popular opinion here on GGD lol

Joanne holds a special place in my heart.

I can tell she's telling us about herself with this album. I won't list them all but...

Diamond Heart - That she's not perfect but she's got a good heart. She knows her worth and she won't settle for less.

Perfect Illusion - The demise of a relationship

John Wayne - The rebound phase

Sinner's Prayer - I see it as sort of a confession for something she's done wrong.

Just Another Day - It's about having a positive outlook and not letting things bring you down

Grigio Girls - Her close female friendships

I can tell it's totally from the heart. Some might say the quality of the lyrics let's the album down but when you look further than the lyrics the album has so much more depth. This is something we should be expecting from a 30 year old woman who is over the partying phase of life, who now identifies as a grown up.

I hope more fans come to appreciate it in time. I've said this before and I don't mean this in a condescending way, but I think it's one that will age with the fans as they grow up.

Joanne is my favorite album but we're playing a dangerous game if we don't acknowledge Gaga stripping down her image is no more authentic or genuine than previous eras. The capacity for artifice, at the very least, still existed and she was still very performative during the Joanne era. For instance, her saying the album was for nonfamous Stefani, who she imagined had kids and was like super overwhelmed is so loaded. Also, Joanne and ASIB both use Americana imagery as a proxy for authenticity, but music genres are not authentic or inauthentic. I think what Gaga told Colbert, that her with her natural hair and no makeup is not actually her, that the real her is whatever she chooses is critical in understanding Joanne and ASIB. We can extend this to Ally and her hair transitions during the film. We kinda need to resist ASIB's message that Brunette Ally was the real Ally and Orangehaired Ally was a fake sellout b*tch.
