Supersonic 49,376 Posted February 13, 2019 Share Posted February 13, 2019 Toronto-based drag queen Brooke Lynn Hytes first Canadian to compete on popular reality TV program People's Party Leader Maxime Bernier sent a tweet Tuesday attacking what he called the "leftist logic" that praises female impersonators while branding white people who wear dreadlocks or blackface as racists or perpetrators of cultural appropriation. Bernier said it was illogical for drag artists wearing makeup and women's clothing to be celebrated as a source of diversity while the actions of others — notably whites who adopt some of the physical characteristics of racial minorities — are demonized as discriminatory. The source of Bernier's angst is a tweet from the official Twitter account run by Global Affairs Canada that praised Toronto-based drag queen Brooke Lynn Hytes, who will be the first Canadian to appear on the Emmy-award winning reality program RuPaul's Drag Race. I mean... yes, drag culture is praised because it eliminates toxic masculinity It's actually beneficial for gender equality. What does white people appropriating dreadlocks do? Granted, I myself don't have much of a problem with "white people appropriating physical characteristics of racial minorities" (though I do think it's important to let opposite voices, especially of those minorities, be heard and respected) but the fact remains that I haven't seen one woman complain about drag culture yet while there are tons of voices who oppose the other subject (S)he should just shut her mouth based on that alone tbh. Supersonic 49,376 Posted February 13, 2019 Author Share Posted February 13, 2019 This is the tweet that caused his meltdown: The originator of the tweet has posted about this on Reddit and said it took a bit of convincing, but his superiors promised him if it generated a lot of positive traffic (which it did), the official Canada account would tweet more about LGBT+ topics regularly. While I would agree that the whole "cultural appropriation" issue is mostly overboard and ridiculous, Blackface is specifically about mocking rather than homage, and that is a key difference and why they should never be equated. Also: Blackface was created as a means to deprave people of color of jobs in acting. Drag, as it exists today, was created as an artistic form of self-expression by LGBT+ people in the underground who have had to escape "regular" society out of fear from being literally killed.
