Petrichor 4,640
Nobody in the United States wants outright socialism. Nobody. A nice mixture of the best qualities of Capitalism and Socialism will do just fine.

Emvee 8,825
Dumb fearmongering. The issue isn’t that Americans want socialism - we don’t. The issue is that we’re finally awake to the fact that decades of conservatism and neoliberalism in the US has seen taxcuts, after taxcuts, after taxcuts for the billionaire class; war, after war, after war for the military industrial complex; and continuous blows to democracy with bullshit like defining money as speech and corporations as people - all the while they have the audacity to say we don’t have enough money for universal healthcare and education or even infrastructure spending. Newsflash: we need to provide healthcare and education in order to compete on a global scale. We need modern infrastructure. TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS DOES NOT WORK. Republicans continue to raise the deficit by passing taxcuts for the rich. Taxcuts do not return the investment. Education and infrastructure spending DO. LateToCult 41,828
@OG Gaga Stan literally what is there to LMAO about here? All you do is hit that button because I don’t say sh*t like “Bernie has the presidency on lock” or “Bernie has 0 competition.” I get you don’t like any form of negativity against Bernie but c’mon. How is trump not going to use a line like “Look at Venezuela” and have Americans eat it up. This is an inch that was given to him by coincidence and now he’s gonna run with it and take a whole mile. We live in 2019 and both China and India is expected to outgrow our economy. What does that mean, you tax the rich 70% and they will move all their assets and monies to countries like emerging superpowers (India and China) and our economy will crash. Again this is 2019. The US has stiff competition in every sector of our economy. We won't win this taxing the rich 70%. I mean, it's not the 1930s but ten years ago it WAS 2009 and it was a large government spending program called the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that saved millions of jobs and stimulated economic growth through investment in infrastructure projects not terribly dissimilar to some elements of the New Deal like the Public Works Administration ... not to mention the government bailout of the auto industry and the rescue, frankly, of several gigantic banking institutions. Capitalism is great until it needs a helping hand, and when private investors don't want to take on the risk of putting a lot of money into a bear economy, then it's on the government to get things going. Serial Chiller 8,044
The exact reason why most of my family are Trump supporters. We live in Vietnam, a communist country and they, my parents and grandparents, lived through the horrors of Communist tyranny. Thus, to them, anything which stands opposed to that evil, the embodiment of which right now is China, must be good. A lot of immigrants actually voted for Trump - refugees from Communist regimes who would rather not relive that nightmare. I'm disappointed but I understand. Communism is terrifying, and fear can drive people to irrational extremes. Bernie Sanders or anyone even slightly associated with the term 'socialism' won't stand a chance in the election. AgusPop 4,162
you Americans don't know how to differentiate Socialism from a communist dictatorship Venezuela was never Socialist. it's a failed communist dictatorship. Socialism are the majority of the European countries with free and universal health care and a moderated Interventionism. Basically you have to read the manifesto of the Socialist International http://www.socialistinternational.org/viewArticle.cfm?ArticleID=

What i should say is that it won't work now as i explained with the China especially competing with the US now. Also remember, that it's because of Obama's regulation, he doubled our national debt in 8 years. He just blew another bubble for us when it bursts it will be another presidents problem. Love him still though, since it's cause of him i'm making money on the stock market today. It was because we were in an economic collapse in 2008 when Obama took office. Obama's budgets included the economic stimulus package. It added $831 billion by cutting taxes, extending unemployment benefits, and funding public works projects. Despite clear signs of expanded economic growth, the latest White House budget estimates predict that Trump is on the verge of overseeing an expansion of federal deficits which will rival that of Obama. Obama saved us from a Depression and gave the uninsured healthcare. Trump gave the one per cent more money.

We want Scandanavian-like public programs. They are still capitalist countries. Don’t think a Latin American country who elected a corrupt communist is comparable. The issue is that America would have to tax way more than Scandinavia to have these programs The top income tax rates in the US for example is actually not that far from 50% already if you factor in State Taxes (something people forget to include in the numbers when they look at Federal Taxes)... The top income taxes in Scandinavian Countries is only a few percentage points higher The US could tax a little more on capital gains taxes like stock gains for wealthy earners that would bring in a little more money as well But overall taxing the rich won't fix the budget problem much less have enough money to pay for all these programs. It's too big of a hole the US is in More importantly than taxing the rich more the US needs to spend money more efficiently and waste less so that in turn it can re-rout more money to programs. Military budget being more reasonable for example that alone would pay for a lot of stuff The US medical system is also extremely expensive. The US spends more per capita and a higher percentage of GDP on healthcare than just about any other developed nation. The system needs a total restructuring before the US could even think of adopting a universal healthcare system Even if the US got all it's taxes fully in line with Northern Europe, it would not be able to afford what northern Europe does because too much money goes to waste

The real difference is Scandinavian income taxes raise a lot of revenue because they are actually rather flat. In other words, they tax most people at these high rates, not just high-income taxpayers. The top marginal tax rate of 60 percent in Denmark applies to all income over 1.2 times the average income in Denmark. From the American perspective, this means that all income over $60,000 (1.2 times the average income of about $50,000 in the United States) would be taxed at 60 percent. Sweden and Norway have similarly flat income tax systems. Sweden’s top marginal tax rate of 56.9 percent applies to all income over 1.5 times the average income in Sweden. Norway’s top marginal tax rate of 39 percent applies to all income over 1.6 times the average Norwegian income. Compare this to The United States. The top marginal tax rate of 46.8 percent (state average and federal combined rates) kicks in at 8.5 times the average U.S. income (around $400,000). Comparatively, few taxpayers in the United States face the top marginal rate.

Looking at tax rates around the developed world I dunno why ppl here in Canada complain tbh Anyway despite the tax differences I still think what I said about wasted spending like military or the healthcare needing restructuring still needs to be looked at

Healthcare definately needs restructuring, but the main problem is with the fifty per cent of adults who get insurance through their employer. Those people don’t want to give up their insurance, even if they want healthcare for the uninsured. Changing over in a country of 325 million is highly complicated. Henri Bardot 3,990
bit of socialism doesn't hurt, in my country for example, when you go to the hospital, you pay after a few days or weeks, and then they give you back 90% of the expenses later. Every family with children gets money, when they're born, when they enter school, and until they are 18. When you go to University outside of the country (we only have one), they may give you around 700€ each month so you don't starve or live in the streets.... Something that doesn't happen in the US. You literally take back your taxes/ parents taxes. But at least no one is starving or in student debt. pooiota

Regardless of whether it comes down or not, my point is at present the spending on military is high enough to impact available financial resources for other programs in a meaningful way Also I can i can see how difficult that would be Canada has a little less than 40 Million people and different Provinces have totally different opinions and views on what national standards should be etc and it's hard to change things nationally so each province often does their own thing A country of 325M would be insanely complicated
