As an American Indian myself (yes, much more than Warren) this doesn't bother me as long as she has served the community honorably and takes pride and action to be a part of the culture. We aren't the people to say

Much of this controversy has been started by white people as far as I'm concerned.

This is what I've been hearing a lot from the Native American community. And why they were so mad at her for taking a DNA test. Because the actual percentage of heritage is not as important as much as the sense of community and pride is.

For comparison, if someone claims to be bisexual, and they 99% of the time date the opposite sex, then I still consider them bisexual if they have a sense of community and pride in being bisexual.

Better to be inclusive than exclusive.

A-f*ckin'-men. Natives, of all communities, are NEVER exclusive. Warren made a misstep that will be misconstrued and exaggerated by the white, uneducated male community... Not the Native community (they're the ones that matter in this situation).

Dont the Original inhabitants of north America prefer to be referred to as Native Americans? Seeing how Indian was pushed on them because a bunch of us white people could not tell the difference between this....

As an Indian, I'm eh about others calling themselves Indian. I dislike it because it's confusing but no strong feelings. People can Do What [They] Want.

I usually call them Native Americans. But I do know that many Native Americans themselves prefer the term Indian. They were called that for a long time and have adopted it as their chosen label. Not really my place to judge in that case.

As for which one's more "politically correct" - I don't think that's really an issue. Native American is probably more politically correct, but I rarely ever see any actual Native American get offended by the label "American Indian" or just "Indian."

I guess the best approach is to use the neutral term Native American and adapt to people's preferences :vegas:

Warren still has the best ideas so far  without much of the bad baggage that Sanders has (also within the Democratic party).

This was filed in the 80's

Are you saying she should have used Native American instead American Indian?

American Indian was the nomenclature at the time.

She also didn't know she was less than 1% or whatever the percentage is at the time of filing.
As stated in this thread by other commentators, many Native American communities value a sense of community and less on percentages. While there is some state 3/4 of more to be considered.

Again, this by a large, raises questions on how Biracial people are considered and represented in American society.

Reminds me when Obama isn't "all black" was a talking point of the right to discredit that Obama is the first Black president.

He was black enough to get y'all to spew racist thoughts though.

They were actually trying to go to India. When they hit land, they assumed the inhabitants were Indians, and that's where the term "Indian" came from. And not everyone in your race is blind? are you blind? You don't have to claim ignorance if you aren't ignorant. Not every white person is a trump supporting racist.

But in all seriousness, what if she grew up sincerely believing she was Native American after hearing her family's folklore being passed on? I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt but it's not looking good for her.
