Thrasher 22,980
Well i also think that, according to the GP perception (and what i hear from some friends of mine), her past pop hits are kinda impassable. Shallow and Million Reasons did it because they belong to the "Lady" branch of Lady Gaga, another side and genre of her discography. These two being highlights in her catalogue is like Adele slaying all the pop girls back in 2011, if that makes sense. There's hype and interest in Gaga and her music, she has a huge star power, people want to see her on stage, but despite this, i don't know how a new pop song can be received. We already saw that with Applause (even though it aged like fine wine) and Perfect Illusion (that sequence in FF2). She has always set the bar too high in everything she has done. “Come over, when you’re sober”
Miaou 39,013
I'm comparing the WW chart-run of ASIB, Frozen and TGS soundtracks and it looks like this : Australia : Frozen - 2 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 8 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 11 weeks #1 so far UK : Frozen - 8 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 28 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 2 weeks #1 so far Canada : Frozen - 7 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - peak #3 A Star Is Born - 9 weeks #1 so far Ireland : Frozen - 8 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 22 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 11 weeks #1 so far US : Frozen - 12 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 2 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 3 weeks #1 so far New-Zealand : Frozen - 3 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 4 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 16 weeks #1 so far France : Frozen - 9 weeks in the top 10, peak #5 The Greatest Showman - 2 weeks in the top 20, peak #20 A Star Is Born - 13 weeks in the top 10, peak #4 so far Germany : Frozen - 1 week in the top 20, peak #18 The Greatest Showman - 4 weeks in the top 10 and 7 weeks in the top 20, peak #5 A Star Is Born - 6 weeks in the top 10 and 18 weeks in the top 20, peak #5 so far Sweden : Frozen - 1 week #1 The Greatest Showman - 5 weeks #1 A Star Is Born - 16 weeks #1 so far Spain : Frozen - 20 weeks in the top 20, peak #11 The Greatest Showman - 10 weeks in the top 20, peak #8 A Star Is Born - 7 weeks in the top 20, peak #2 so far Italy : Frozen - 22 weeks in the top 10, peak #2 The Greatest Showman - ? A Star Is Born - 5 weeks in the top 10, peak #4 so far Japan : Frozen - 3 weeks #1 The Greatest Showman - 1 week #1 A Star Is Born - 5 weeks in the top 20, peak #10 so far Netherlands : Frozen - 11 weeks in the top 10, peak #2 The Greatest Showman - 5 weeks in the top 10, peak #5 A Star Is Born - 18 weeks in the top 10, peak #3 so far Denmark : Frozen - peak #12 The Greatest Showman - peak #8 A Star Is Born - 6 weeks #1 so far Poland : Frozen - peak #7 The Greatest Showman - ? A Star Is Born - 1 week #1 so far Norway : Frozen - 10 weeks in the top 10, peak #3 The Greatest Showman - 6 weeks in the top 10, peak #2 A Star Is Born - 16 weeks in the top 10, 4 weeks #1 so far Austria : Frozen - one week in the top 10, peak #9 The Greatest Showman - 6 weeks in the top 10, peak #3 A Star Is Born - 18 weeks in the top 10, peak #2 so far Belgium : Frozen - 2 weeks in the top 20, peak #18 The Greatest Showman - 5 weeks in the top 10, peak #4 A Star Is Born - 7 weeks in the top 10, peak #4 so far The WW chart-run of ASIB is still "young", the Oscars are coming and the release of the DVD just starts. So far, ASIB is pulling impressive numbers, a lot bigger than Frozen and TGS in many countries like Canada, France, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, Belgium...etc. The only disappointing country is Japan. In Ireland, ASIB's soundtrack is already bigger than Frozen's soundtrack. It's on the way to follow the impressive chart-run of TGS's chart-run. In the US, ASIB's soundtrack is on the way to surpass TGS's soundtrack. It's only in the UK that ASIB is making "low" numbers comparing to TGS and Frozen's soundtracks. But the release of the DVD just starts here. So, I think it's safe to say that ASIB is on the way to sell at least 6M WW, but I think it will sell a lot more than 6M. We're clearly not ready. Cause it's chart-run is already impressive before the release of the DVD and the Oscars. We better enjoy this ASIB era charters cause what Gaga is doing right now with this soundtrack is phenomenal

But then there are legacy artists Like Madonna, MJ, Mariah and Whitney. These will always be there with their entire discography even if there is one song that overshadows everything else (Whitney). Gaga is supposed to be a legacy artist but she needs more iconic, at best pop, smash hits to cement that status or she will end up like Britney or Katy who will be known for mostly one song (Baby One More Time or Firework). You not only need to want to be a cultural phenomenon, something Gaga arguably really wants, but you need to put effort into preserving that status. Katy blew her chance pretty much with Witness while Britney did way better than anybody would've ever thought. Britney made the best she could do but failed to capture the public again like she did in 1998-2001 so everyone still sees her strutting down a school hallway. Gaga captured the public between 2009-2011 and she seems to repeak in a 2011 way now, but what she needs is something that can be put into the same category as The Fame/Monster (success wise not musically speaking) so she can't be defined by just one era. Right now The Fame/Monster trumps everything else Gaga has ever done and I'm not sure if ASIB is large enough to solidify another Gaga persona in the public. This is why I think that she needs at least a few more bigger pop smashes that are distinct enough from The Fame/Monster so people don't just remember her for that. Being successful for 10 years is impressive but having lasting impact that people try to replicate you even years after your career has fizzled out is so much more satisfying than any short-lived repeak (Madonna vs Gaga , Mariah vs Ariana).
