I genuinely had no idea that Ally and Dinah had released their first proper single (though Ally's was literally only released 3 days ago, so fair enough). Just goes to show who all the promotion and general attention has been given to. *cough*Camila*cough* But anyway, it's hard to judge what some of the girls first proper single is as almost all of them did a duet for their very first outing. I think of Love Lies as Normani's first even though it was a duet, for example. But you are basing this on lead single, as in, what will hopefully be the lead from their debut album, so ok. With that in mind...

Camila - Standard dancey pop and while servicable, I'm glad this wasn't her eventual lead single. It was totally dropped from the standard version, along with that I Have Questions song (which was totally wrong as I Have Questions is brilliant) because it wasn't the huge success it was hoped to be but it seemed ultimately the right thing to do as this song isn't truly her style or what she wanted to make and wouldn't have fitted on the sound of her album. Just shows that sometimes, a singer can fail to be big purely because their lead single wasn't the right one. Havana is a much worthier choice. But Crying In The Club is acceptable to make your beginnings. 3.5/5

Ally - This song has a lot of unfortunate downsides. First off, I hate the misuse of that recent buzzword "low key." The young are using this word all wrong, especially in songs and it's really evident here. And the next thing that hits you is that the way the word is sung makes it sound like she's saying Loki, like the superhero character! (this alone should be crying out for a parody video!). The beginning of Tyga's verse is really bad but then it thankfully gets better. It's also clear how much she's trying to recreate Camila's sound for herself and make her version of Havana in the hopes that she'll have as big of a hit. But all that aside, is it that much of a big deal? This is actually very catchy and danceable and surprisingly so much better than I intended. I didn't see it toppling any of the ones I already knew but it ends up doing just that. 4/5

Lauren - Stunning, beautiful, amazing, moody dark brilliance. This is the kind of quality that I wish more modern music consisted of. And not to mention, she wrote it all herself with no outside help and even directed her own video! Props to her for doing all this on her own. The only thing is, the beat sounds far too similar to the other brilliant song, Make It Rain by Foy Vance. That song has been covered a lot of the US version of The Voice and Ed Sheeran's version is very well known before that so I don't believe for a minute that Lauren hasn't heard this and been inspired by it. But when it's this good, I don't know if I care. 5/5

Normai - Good, if rather standard RnB, not much more to say. It's far better than a lot of contemporary RnB I've been hearing of late and it does sound very smooth and polished nor does it utilise any annoying singing techniques which are all too common these days. I definitely think it's one of the least memorable, though and I can see why its been largely ignored. 3/5

Dinah Jane - Boring, bland, lifeless hip pop and somehow just what I imagined she'd put out. This is the level that a lot of girl band members produce when they go solo and it makes me wonder why they even bother. Not catchy, not memorable and it actually has the gall to have a similar beat to Work From Home and if that wasn't bad enough, she even makes a reference to working from home in it! If you're going to jack the beat from an old hit you made with your group, don't make it so obvious! Cringe overload. 2/5

All in all, Lauren > Ally > Camila > Normani > Dinah Jane. I totally think Lauren has the most talent and potential and I really want to see her do well. Out of all of them, Camila had the biggest chance of doing well, which she did, closely followed by Lauren but as for the other three, I hope they find something to do as solo singing is not going to work out for them. The closest I ever saw all the members of a girl group have a success solo was Destiny's Child but that was back when we gave the music industry more money and there were only 3 of them (referring to the eventual 3). The last time a 5 member group tried to all go solo, it was Girls Aloud. That..ahem...didn't work out. Which is why I advise no other group to try it. Just be honest with your limitations, be grateful for the hits you had as part of a group and move on.
