More than 2.6 million British people think the Holocaust is a myth, a poll has found.

Five per cent of UK adults do not believe millions of Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazis, according to the survey, which survivors and anti-racism campaigners said pointed to a “terribly worrying” level of denial.

A further 8 per cent of the British public claims the scale of the genocide has been exaggerated, according to research released to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day.

“Such widespread ignorance and even denial is shocking,” said Olivia Marks-Woldman, chief executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust (HMDT), which commissioned the poll.

Six million Jewish people were murdered by Germany’s Nazi regime during the Second World War as part of Adolf Hitler’s campaign of extermination.

Almost two-thirds of the British public either grossly underestimate that figure or have no idea how many had died, the survey found

One in five said fewer than two million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, while 45 per cent said they did not know

2.6 million people is one in 25 Brits :triggered:

But in America isn’t it one in 3 that doesn’t believe in the Holocaust? :oprah:

Which would be like 110 million people? :messga:

Ignorance is crazy. People really out there believing that the Holocaust wasn't real, that the earth is flat, that global warming is a hoax, etc.

Make a worldwide poll and you'll be even more surprised.

The generation that lived during the Holocaust is ending. People who actually suffered during the Holocaust are dying of old age and disappearing. And as time goes by, History becomes myth. Even if we have every sort of evidence, this will happen. History books talk about the war, the reasons for the war, but the Holocaust is too strong to be so openly discussed and taught in schools. Many places see it as taboo. I have no doubt that, in fifty years, more people will forget about it. And it might happen again, something very similar.

We are already witnessing the rise of far-right movements. It's a beginning. You know why? Because Hitler is taboo. Instead of studying his speeches and understanding how harmful his words were, the world is too ashamed and prefers to forget about him. And let others take the advantage from the ignorance.

Sort of fake news tbh... 5% of the sample group believe the Holocaust didn't happen, not 2.6 million.

In my history classes they always talked about it as much (if not more) as the rest of the war. And they wouldn't spare the details. Maybe it's because I'm in France so historically we were really close to it and really touched by that situation, but I feel that we really talk about it and we are constantly reminded of it, there's a huge duty of remembrance.

Same here in Canada our history covered it in multiple school grades

One of my history school trips was even going to a museum and we had a guest survivor from a concentration camp (he was really old) giving a speech

I think this study just highlights ignorance more than anything. I don’t think anyone is outright denying that it happened, just noting that most Brit’s aren’t aware of the scope of the persecution of the Jews.
