It’s obnoxious again that he’s suggesting roles are few and far between for someone of Filipino descent but also feels so happy he can pass as white, giving him far more opportunities than those of Filipino descent that are viewed as such.

He's lucky that he looks more white than Asian but if it's vice versa wouldn't get that much acclaim on his roles. Btw, the role he played in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is also half-Filipino so I would say he's perfect for the role.

He said that his white passing is what has gotten him his fame and status in Hollywood, but that as a half-Filipino actor, there are not many roles available. There's plenty for him as a white passing person and others like him, but not if they look more "asian". That's the point he's making. He doesn't mean *literally* him, he means people of his identity and ethnic makeup. I personally don't see what's wrong with making a point of saying that "I am half filipino but my ability to look white has benefited me; others who do not white pass do not have this luxury." Because think of straight-acting gay dudes. They would still say "people like them" i.e. gay people, but that their ability to blend in benefits them as opposed to someone like, say, Johnny Weir who's very very very flamboyant.

It's true. But once you reach a certain status you get all the roles you want. When is the last time Keanu Reeves didn't take a role that was meant for a white dude.( a role that typically went to a white person) I don't know why Hollywood is so weird about having only white people in leading g roles. Ethinic people have been pulling their weight and pulling in plenty of $$$ at the box office for a long time now.

Guys, I think his motive was right, he maybe knows a lot of actors of his ethnicity and just wanted to adress the problem, while gaining his success as beeing a "white boy on the outside", it's maybe hard for him to accept the circumstances where he is because of that. Maybe he didn't choose the right words... :saladga:

It's like saying dan reynolds fighting for gay rights is shallow because he doesn't suck d***

Yeah but isn’t the Andrew guy full Filipino? I heard that’s why Darren got backlash cuz they were white washing the original guy and that they should have casted a full Filipino actor to take on the role.

anyways I always found Darren so unlikeable, don’t know why but he just rubs me the wrong way.

I thought he said in one of those making of with Ryan Murphy that he’s grateful to be casted as Andrew Cunanan coz it sucks to see people whitewashing an Asian role. I personally appreciate Hollywood for trying to embrace us Asians more but tbh movie studios still try their best to find racial ambiguous faces as leading males. Criss in ACS and Henry Golding in CRA are perfect examples. Golding doesn’t even look Chinese and he is also half white?

I just really hope that I get to see Asians represented in a more authentic way in Hollywood one day. Just talk about East Asians with similar skin colors, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Taiwanese have really different culture. It sucks to see Hollywood identifying that as Asian culture but different cultures. I also have a feeling that they often leave Indians out of the picture.

All this "race purity" talk is disgusting.

I swear you guys will start saying you're against interracial marriages because the children are biracial and can't represent anyone because they're not full of either race.

If looking as stereotypically of a race is what you guys want, that's not diverse representation at all.
Biracial people deserve a place in representation.

At least he's using his platform to speak about an issue in hollywood. It's not him being "obnoxious"  or "complaining."

Our parents had also been attacked and treated as race traitor.

After the fiasco of Ariana Miyamoto winning Miss Japan, I have no hope at all of how race issues will address biracial people.
