Bernie Sanders, the Vermont independent, is making another run for the White House. Two sources with direct knowledge of his plans told Yahoo News that Sanders, an independent and self-described “democratic socialist,” plans to announce his presidential bid imminently. While Sanders has been considering a bid for months, one of the sources said he was emboldened by early polls of the race that have consistently showed him as one of the top candidates in a crowded Democratic primary field. In particular, the source said Sanders was heartened to see numbers indicating he is one of the leading candidates among African American and Latino voters, two groups he was perceived as struggling with in 2016. The source also alluded to a spate of recent polls that show Sanders as the most popular politician in the country. They attributed Sanders’ strength in the polls to the base and name recognition he built with the prior presidential bid. “What the senator has this time that he didn’t have last time is he is the most popular elected official in the country right now,” the source said. “That’s light years away from 2016, when very few people knew who he was.” A third source said Sanders’ bid will begin with an exploratory committee. But if Beto runs, sorry Bernie. I think he will have a better chance nationwide. Bernie has a lot of baggage with conservatives and the DNC bots. Don't want a severely divided Democratic base. And for those wondering, no I wasn't a registered Republican. I was a registered Independent before but in New York it's closed primaries so I couldn't vote in the Democratic primary in 2016. Beto is a Democrat and Bernie Sanders is not a Democrat, so I there's a reason right there for you when considering who should win the Democratic primary. Also, Beto is a better fundraiser and won't take PAC money (like Sanders). He's potentially better than even Obama, so there's that. I voted for Beto in the Senate race. The reason I'd consider Beto over Bernie is because Beto seems to be able to appeal to independents who lean conservative. Something that might boost him in the necessary states. I'm aware Bernie also appeals to many independents but just seeing how AOC is treated makes me thing "SOCIALIST/COMMUNIST" is going to be plastered all over if Bernie does run. Republicans are going to call whoever runs for president a communist. That's irrelevant. AOC is popular and proposing popular policies (an overwhelming majority of the country supports her 70% tax on the wealthy, including a huge number of Republicans). I don't understand how anyone could see what's happened with her and think that her approach is a problem. I'd have her run for president over anyone else, if she were old enough. Again, Beto votes with Trump 1/3rd of the time while living in a safe district. He didn't have to vote for bills that facilitate Trump's immigration agenda and prop up the fossil fuel industry when we're a couple of decades from global catastrophe from climate change; he chose to. Even if none of that were true, Bernie outpolls him. You're talking about horserace guesstimates about who would appeal to which demographic as a reason to vote for Beto when 1) Bernie outpolls him, 2) Bernie has consistently been polled as the most popular active politician in the country for the last four years, despite constant Republican attacks and 3) Bernie or Beto would both wipe the floor with Trump. They outpoll Hillary's average polling numbers against Trump by double digits. Policy is what matters now. Your priorities are off. Policy is literally the most important thing.
