zakariah 11,722
I feel like she kinda has a fear of reaching TF/TFM/BTW levels of success only because of the inevitable downfall after that kind of success, and what it could do to her mental & physical health, we all know what she went through before the AP era and during the AP era. so now she's being cautious of just how successful she can be during an era. LateToCult 40,915
I think knowing she was gonna play Ally influenced her decision to go towards a folk/country/rockish route, which happened to be a less commercial friendly genre.

Disnalex 1,941
I think she released Joanne instead to prepare for ASIB Gaga for Disney
RochestrMonstr 3,223
She didn’t “avoid” hits. She just made the album she wanted to make regardless of whether or not it fit with what was commercially popular at the time.

They were never intended to be released 1) receipts. I’m not remembering any of this. 2) I really don’t think Redone would take time out of his schedule to write/produce songs just for fun with Gaga. She's not rihanna or beyonce so what u're talking about ? Artists make art that they don't like all the time. She probably has hundreds of finishes songs that she hates. It's perfectly normal for true artists to hoard their art that they don't deem good enough to release
Reginald 13,841
She really redeemed herself for me as a songwriter with A Star Is Born. For the first time in her career, during Joanne, I had to ask myself if Gaga was losing steam with her songwriting quality. Besides the notable exceptions Million Reasons, Just Another Day, Grigio Girls, and Angel Down, most of the songs were unexpectedly weak. Not talking about production or the era itself, just the actual songs. I'm just glad Joanne is over and the queen of writing (or co-writing) great songs has returned
JustAnother 5,113
I think she got tired of the songs she was making. Maybe she also she didn’t want to become only known as a dance-pop artist, where her fans only expect that from her (some of y’all still do though despite half her albums not being that...) techhausmonster 175
The story and message of Joanne was far more important that success on the charts/radio. Now that the message has been spread, we can allow LG6 to come do what she needs to do
JazzGa 14,621
Here's my personal theory. I'm sure there are a multitude of reasons but I would bet that this one holds a grain of truth: She was rebranding herself. Those "dark BAHPS" the fans can't seem to get over were not destined to be the worldwide hit they'd be if she released them now. Gaga was playing the long con and already eyeing that role in ASIB. She released Joanne for multiple reasons, one of them being to get more experience writing in a folk/country/americana style and to attract "serious musician" attention from ASIB producers and Coop. She changed gears awfully fast from "AHS is the bestest acting gig ever and it inspired my new album" to "lol forget that PINK COWBOY HAT THO!" It's pretty negative, and even mean, for you to insinuate she was intentionally avoiding success. She has her own goals that are not related to getting #1 pop songs. jujubaruda 1,292
Because she had a vision where she was a mother of 3 kids with a glass of Pinot Grigio so she made Joanne instead inspired by this.
jujubaruda 1,292
There were 100 people in a room and nobody believed in LG5, but Joanne did.
Pray4FameGa 3,141
I think she’s past the point in her career where she feels a pressure to release and has to meet label deadlines. I think she banks the music she writes and patiently waits to see if something cohesive will come. That’s the vibe I’m getting from her. I think even Joanne was rush released a bit for ASIB. I think she has bops.
