Chance the Rapper admits he made a “mistake” when he recorded a song with R. Kelly in the final episode of the Lifetime docuseries Surviving R. Kelly.

As both the rapper and the R&B singer are musical icons in their native Chicago, their paths have crossed on numerous occasions: During Chance the Rapper’s Lollapalooza set in 2014, held in the Windy City, he brought out Kelly as a surprise guest. “Make some noise for the Pied Piper of R&B,” he told the crowd.

The following year, Chance the Rapper made a cameo in Kelly’s “Backyard Party” video and collaborated with the singer on “Somewhere in Paradise.” However, in an interview that features in Surviving R. Kelly, Chance said that in hindsight he regretted working with Kelly.

“Making a song with R. Kelly was a mistake. I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were black women,” Chance the Rapper told Cassius‘ Jamilah Lemieux. “I made a mistake.”

It’s unclear whether Chance’s comments were recorded in accordance with Surviving R. Kelly or if it was unreleased footage from an unrelated interview.

Glad he's spoken out. So many artist failed these women when they chose to work with him.

Gaga needs to say something.

This has always been one of those indefensible things in Gaga's career and I hope she talks about this when she is able to. Of course she has done so much for sexual assault awareness and is a survivor of it herself but yeah there will come a day when she will need to talk about this and just say it was a mistake working with him. It's as simple as that. I know she will though. Gaga always goes above and beyond to do what is right. That  being said I find it totally sad that people on many forums have decided to make this about Gaga instead of shining a light on the survivors of R.Kelly's despicable crimes. These women are so brave and I applaud them so much for standing up and speaking out. They are not only survivors but they are also warriors and heroes.

Wow. Takes courage to admit one's mistakes so frankly and with so much truth--especially when there's a bias to it.

It shows you really grew up.

This is what "SJWs" really want. If people could make a meaningful apology like this one, that's what would show they changed. Admitting one's faults instead of trying to explain them away or blaming others for them or excusing yourself for BS reasons. Most apologies we get are half-assed or forced or don't take responsibility. Props to him for setting a good example.

Edit: I do not blame some people for still being mad. It takes a lot to "get over" anything related to sexual assault. I think he did one of the best things he could've.

The article has been updated with a video and more from the interview

“Making a song with R. Kelly was a mistake,” he told Cassius‘ Jamilah Lemieux in an interview in May, a portion of which was aired in Surviving R. Kelly. “At the time, it wasn’t even present in my mind that people could feel any type of way about his presence on a track of mine. I think for a long time I was only able to understand R. Kelly’s situation and presence in the world when it comes down to his trial and his accusations and his accusers as a victim. I don’t know if that’s because I’m from Chicago or ‘cause he made great music or ‘cause he is a black man.

“We’re programmed to really be hypersensitive to black male oppression,” he added. “But black women are exponentially [a] higher oppressed and violated group of people just in comparison to the whole world. Maybe I didn’t care because I didn’t value the accusers’ stories because they were black women. Usually, niggas that get in trouble for **** like this on their magnitude of celebrity, it’s light-skinned women or white women. That’s when it’s a big story. I’ve never really seen any pictures of R. Kelly’s accusers.”

In the interview, the contrite rapper expressed relief that the accusations from the multiple women who have accused Kelly of mental, physical and sexual abuse were getting more widely heard. “I can’t be right all the time,” he said. “I made a mistake and I’m happy that those women are getting voices now and I can grow to understand better what my positioning should be or should’ve been when that opportunity came.”

I mean, I feel like he's only sorry because of the new Doc and the accusations coming around again.. It's not like Chance was around when Kelly first came onto the scene. Chance knew what he was getting himself into. Same with Gaga. I just don't get it.

I'm glad he was so specific about his fault and apologized so directly. Gaga should do the same, and maybe there should be a victims' fund or something they can both donate to. It's weird that Gaga is all about mental health but is staying so mum on this undying and really noxious controversy.

I don't think it'd take much away from them by releasing a statement. John Legend and Chance both spoke out but at the end of the day, people are still focused on R. Kelly and The victims.

^^^ Truth. I don't think people who've done victims wrong taking responsibility for their actions hurts the victims or takes attention away from them. If anything, it helps shine more of a spotlight on the issue and (potentially) the need to care for victims and believe them when they speak up in ways we haven't yet learned to.

I would personally like Gaga to come forward and speak about the collaboration. But I think timing is important as well. She had a window back in 2015-2016 but chose to keep quiet. Right now is probably the worst time to come forward because anything she says will probably get lost in the whirlwind of Surviving R. Kelly and it won’t seem sincere because of how outspoken she’s been about sexual assault but chose to skip out on the R. Kelly series. I hope she speaks up in at least a couple of years in an appropriate environment like an in depth interview.

@Borislshere what are your thoughts?

Honestly I think now would be the perfect time. I feel like if she does it in the future, people will be like "Well why didn't you speak up when you had the chance?" They'll probably do it now but now that the documentary has come out, I think people will be a bit more forgiving. I'm fine with her not being in the actual documentary but just disappointed that she hasn't said a single word about the whole situation.
