andreas85 400 Posted December 25, 2018 Share Posted December 25, 2018 In Finland homosexual acts were legalized in 1971, although encouraging people to engage in homosexual acts was still illegal. The first pride event was organized in 1975. In 1981 homosexuality was removed from list of mental illnesses. In 1999 law regarding encouraging was abolished. In 2002 it became legal also for homosexual couples to register their relationships. In 2009 law regarding registering relationships was changed so that adoption became possible also for registered couples including homosexual couples. Gender-neutral marriage including gay marriage became - finally - legal in 2017. Stupid right-wing extremists and christian conservatives were the only ones opposing the new law. As you can see, Finland wasn't especially progressive still in the 1990's but the good thing is that most of the important goals regarding lgbt rights have been reached. Still, there's some very important things to do: In Finland there's a law that requires transsexuals to be sterilized and current right-wing government has decided to keep this law. TheJoanneJoker 3,866 Posted December 25, 2018 Share Posted December 25, 2018 Romania 1989 - the fall of communism 1996 - gay sex is decriminalized 2000 - anti-discrimination laws @ work 2001 - LGBT people are allowed to serve in the army 2006 - anti-discrimination laws IN ALL THE DOMAINS - Hate speech is also forbidden from now on 2016 - A religious coalition raises 3.000.000 signatures to change the constitution in order to ban gay marriage, although there isn't any form of legal coverage for gay couples to be recognised under. Many of these signatures were fake (we do have legal criteria for petitions, but their campaign didn't go through any sort of legal check), as many of these signatures were reportedly raised in schools (which is illegal), with some schools putting pressure on students to sign the petition. 2017 - The topic of the anti-LGBT referendum became more and more milked on TV and by politicians. The pressure was getting worse every passing month 2018 - September The Parliament of Romania, ruled by a major corrupted party - PSD (Social Democratic Party) votes to hold the anti-LGBT referendum, even the "liberal" party PNL (National Liberal Party) agreed on this. The only political party who opposed the referendum and even boycotted it was USR (Save Romania Union). October The government modified the referendum laws through an emergency ordinance a week before the referendum was hold, even tho this is highly discouraged. The changes included: - casted ballots down from 50% of the electorate to 30% in order for the referendum to be valid - 2 days of voting instead of 1 - no more anti-fraud systems or security cameras at the vote After the first day of voting, only 5% of the electorate turned out to the ballots, a historical low premiere for Romania. At the end of the final day of voting, only 21% of the electorate showed up, thanks to the pressure of the church and the local administrations who forced people to go vote. The referendum has failed due to low turnout, as people heavily boycotted it, saying it was an attempt to distract the polarized society from the agenda of the government, which is focusing on undermining the rule of law so the corrupted politicians can get away. Anyway, the parties are now discussing the possibility of allowing same-sex civil partnerships, as the referendum failed so Romania will never be able to try to take a step back on LGBT rights ever again. But by analysing all the stuff that has happened, chances are we will have a new major ruling coalition in 2020, made of USR and PNL, which is going to be more gay friendly by far.
