Why is Nothing Breaks Like A Heart not successful?

I think you meant to say 'didn't release it at the right time'? Funny cause Mark and Miley keep saying how they did it at exactly the right time, and any earlier or later would've been less 'right'.

I was sure he meant the collab happened at the right time not the release, since a collab can happen a couple months before a release or over a year before release

The truth is - unfortunately - it is just not a very commercial song. It does not have mass-appeal. And whilst tracks like 'Shallow' are not particularly on-trend, they have a timelessness - and almost a simplicity to them - that is able to breakthrough the current consensus. 'Nothing Breaks Like A Heart' feels too edgy, yet at the same time, too regressive... it just doesn't strike that 'hit' balance. But it's still a fantastic song for pop music lovers - it's just not going to be a huge hit for either of them.

That said, it's also unfair to compare Miley to Gaga. Whilst Gaga's guaranteed grip on the charts is not what it used to be, the Little Monster fanbase is a very, very powerful force in the music industry. Before ASIB (where I think she won over a lot of the GP), any Gaga track / album would achieve at least some success solely on the backs of her fans. Gaga has an insanely committed fanbase. Miley, on the other hand, does not. Sure, she has a lot of fans... but her fans are not a force that can distort a general consensus - whereas monsters can, even if it is only slightly (see #15 Perfect Illusion).

I should add, whilst off-topic, that ASIB has done wonders for Gaga. Now, in addition to the Monsters, she is going to have a much bigger appeal to the GP, too. Her next pop release, as a result, could really have a chance of smashing. Little Monsters + ASIB fans = a strong consensus = mass-appeal = streams / sales = a hit.

And for Miley to ever reach that formula again, she is going to have to release music that is aimed to her core fanbase, whilst also appealing (or at least intriguing... Bangerz says hi) to the GP. She needs an edgy but mainstream track... something dynamic, but something also pretty consumable and simple. Gaga is a great example of that formula. Just Dance, Poker Face, Bad Romance, Born This Way... they're intelligent, interesting songs but they're dressed in simplicity.

Good point. The Monsters and the casual fans are a dedicated yet extremely diverse community. They have a common bond that transcends differences. Like they will always stand up for Gaga. Miley and her generation of singers (Lorde, Sam Smith etc) don’t really have a relationship with their fans. They sing because it’s a job. Their is no shared journey.

There is no explosive chorus, if it had, it would have had a better chance :lolly:

The chorus does seem anticlimactic now that you mention it :messga:

REALITY

At first, I really didn't like the song, but it's a grower. I love it now.

I think the problem is that I just don't think the GP cares about Miley as much as they once did (which is a shame because I actually love Miley a lot). Younger Now was pretty much a flop and her Bangerz era, while very successful, was so polarizing that it turned Miley into an artist that you either really loved or really hated.

VOLANTIS

The song itself is nice but not only was it released at the wrong time but it just doesn't have the factors of a comeback. Not to mention it was heavily hyped before the release with the energy dying down the second it was released. It seems more like the kind of song you follow a smash with, not be the actual lead of an album.

That J

I think it's one of the best songs of the year and her vocals are amazing. She has a hint of Dolly with a dash of Beth from Gossip and it flows. If a song isnt filthy or sounds the same as everything else, it fails.

I love it. It's a hit in my house!

Why do you think this song is not as successful as it seemed to promise? Will the same thing happen to the lead of LG6? Or is Gaga too big an artist to flop nowadays?

I have to laugh

insight

Nobody's safe from flopping these days, including the successful ones. The industry has totally brainwashed the GP in terms of accepting music versatility and keeps feeding them same songs produced by 3-4 notorious producers.

It's not that catchy, it's not that good, Miley is a notorious slurrer of words & it's the wrong time of year for a song like this, which sounds like an album filler anyway.

Is Thank u next ?
