Trump promised to take on the NRA during the primaries, he was very vocal about not being afraid of them. He spoke about raising the age requirement to own a gun, and he was clearly the least NRA-friendly presidential candidate. Then out of no where things changed. Trump started speaking at NRA events, and told the NRA that they had a "friend and champion in the White House." Then we found out the NRA essentially bankrupted themselves giving to Trump's presidential campaign. They donated more money to Trump than they have to any other candidate, ever. Then we find out the Russian spy Maria Butina's boyfriend privately claimed to have set up a back channel of communication between Russia and the Trump campaign using the NRA as a go-between. Now, Trump bans bump stocks? Why? Why would he piss of the NRA? Why would he do something to alienate his base at such a risky time for him? I'm so confused. This is weird. Why would Trump risk upsetting his base by banning bump stocks when their support is the only thing holding his presidency aloft? Why would the NRA spend more on Trump than they spent on any other candidate in the organizations history, to the point of bankrupting the entire organization, even though Trump's stance on gun control has always been far from the NRA's ideal? Then there is the Russia factor - the spouse of a Russian spy alleging to have set up a back channel of communication using the NRA as a conduit for Trump and Russia.
