Ok so...

Til It Happens To You was 95% written by Diane

Come to Mama was 95% written by Father Misty Thing

and now Perfect Illusion was first written by Kevin/Tame Impala? :/

Actually, many songs on ARTPOP are "covers", too:

• Aura: from Infected Mushrooms

• Venus: from Zombie Zombie

• Mary Jane Holland: from Can't Beat The Machines (The Good Natured)

• Donatella: from Karma Bitch (Anjulie)

etc.

No joke, I was expecting it to be the "ma-ma-pa-pa-pa-pefect illusion" thing.

Written by other artists is not the same as using instrumental from other songs, plus these aren’t covers, just samples

For Venus Gaga samples Zombie Zombie's Rocket Number 9, as Zombie Zombie was sampling Sun Ra's Rocket Number Nine Take Off For The Planet Venus. All three songs are very different from one another. Gaga can exaggerate her role in the song writing process, but I'm not sure Venus is an example of that.

Aura: Just heavily samples the Infected Mushroom instrumental and has a few Zedd sounds added
Venus: Audio samples from Zombie Zombie used, and stems from an unreleased Madeon song
Mary Jane Holland: Just used a beat from Madeon's catalog that happened to be used by a different artist but never officially released
Donatella: Just used a beat from Zedd's catalog that happened to be used by a different artist but never officially released, but was performed

So basically:

Aura: Heavily samples song by Infected Mushroom
Venus: Using stems from an unreleased song by Madeon and just samples sounds from Zombie Zombie (Which isn't anything new cause A LOT of songs sample other songs)
Mary Jane Holland: Instrumental from producer's catalog
Donatella: Instrumental from producer's catalog

That's all

She high key ruined this song; nowadays I just listen to the instrumental. Also, it's a bit disappointing how the lead single off Joanne was basically a tame impala cover. Say what you want to say, but she basically purchased the demo off of them and sang over it (in a worse way). To this day, I still don't understand what possessed her team to release this song. Yeah, other tracks like DiC weren't quite "radio" friendly, but you can't say PI was any better. I had multiple non-gaga fans tell irl that PI is annoying on the ears. To say, "oh!! but at least it's different and ahead of its time" -- nope. It's a pretty standard, if not pretty mediocre, indie-rock-pop track and is undoubtedly her worst single.

I have nothing good to say about this track, especially when Joanne had much better tracks.

Like if you're gonna just cover someone's song you better eat that ****. It has to be spectacular/noteworthy. Ex.

The album version is too grating. We just love it because it's gaga, it has a great instrumental/melody, and it grew on us.

We slept on such a great song guys. I'll be honest and say I was disappointed when I listened to it for the first time, even more than I was with Applause because it's not what I expected Gaga's next move to sound like but it has grown on me so much that I feel bad it didn't do well. Out of all the songs on the album, it was the best choice for a lead single.

I agree with you about everything, except about it being the best lead choice. It was literally the worst lead single choice in the history of single choices, maybe ever:ladyhaha:

MR or DH wouldn't have been smashes, but would've been received much better critically, and would've gone down better with her new C2C older/adult contemporary audience. Joanne would've been a much better introduction to the theme of the album. If she wanted a trendy pop bop, DIC fits the bill (possibly JW too). If she wanted a quirkier bop that shows off the album's country tinge, A-Yo would've been perfect (IMO this should've been the lead).

After the GP got sick of Gaga's "too much-ness" with ARTPOP, and were begging for something simpler, PI just seems like the most obvious song not to use as the lead...

I’d say it to her We- :lana:Like it still slaps but if she gave it more of a Kevin flair it would’ve been better no shade just tea

If she was really that insecure about what fans would accept she wouldn't have gone into this country-rock/ acoustic/ glam direction.

I think there’s an in between of not doing it at all or going full country while still acknowledging insecurity doing so. She’s mentioned how vulnerable the experience was for her, that puts her in an insecure place. I think trying to find a compromise is a fairly telling way of communicating that she wasn’t totally sure about the acoustic-ish direction as a product but that on a personal level knew it had to be done. The fact that it so glaringly stands out from her discography would say as much.

I LOVE the emphasis on the production. That's the way the song should have always been. Gaga over sang which was nice at capturing the essence of anger and frustration but this sounds so much better and ethereal
