This. I don't think Gaga meant to be mean or shady in 5ft2, it seemed like she was just expressing her frustration that Madonna effectively went behind her back and trashed her in the media in 2011-12. Imagine being 25 years old, barely a few years into the music industry, and someone who you idolised and wanted to honor then calls you reductive and trashes you? I think most people would naturally feel really upset that their idol did that to them, so I don't really see what the problem with Gaga expressing that hurt in 5ft2.

In terms of that 2016 music video where she 'shaded' Madonna... Again, I don't think Gaga intentionally meant to be shady or diss Madonna. You can see in the interview that she's kind of pissed off that people are still comparing her to Madonna nearly 10 years into her career. I think it upsets her when all people do is compare her to another singer, as Gaga really sees herself as her own artist and auteur so I imagine that being compared to Madonna makes her feel like people are taking away from her artist integrity as a song writer and musician. At this point in her career especially, I think Gaga was to be seen as Gaga and not as 'the new this or the new that'. As Gaga seemed a little pissed off with the comparison, I'm not sure she articulated her feelings in the most articulate way so it came across shadier than it did. Admittedly, I haven't watched that interview in over a year so I might be remembering it wrong, but that was my general impression from it anyway.
