Mississippi Republican Senator Jokes About Hangings and Voter Suppression

Cindy Hyde-Smith is a current appointed Senator for Mississippi. She is also a candidate in an upcoming run off with Democrat candidate Mike Espy for the Senate seat.

In recent days, Hyde-Smith has come under fire for several comments she's been making. The first was a video showing Hyde-Smith thanking a supporter by saying, "If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row."

Many Mississippians were outraged her comments considering the state's insidious history of lynchings along with the morbid idea of having fun at a public execution. Many also thought it was hypocritical considering just days later, she spoke at a pro-life event where she insisted upon her commitment to the "sanctity of life." Hyde-Smith refused to apologize for her comments, saying, "In a comment on Nov. 2, I referred to accepting an invitation to a speaking engagement. In referencing the one who invited me, I used an exaggerated expression of regard, and any attempt to turn this into a negative connotation is ridiculous."

Then, today, another news story featured Hyde-Smith joking about voter suppression as she tells some of her supporters in a recorded video, "And then they remind me that there's a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who ... maybe we don't want to vote. Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that's a great idea." The defense from her campaign is that she was "making a joke and clearly the video was selectively edited."

Hyde-Smith supporters seem to be invigorated by these recent news stories, similar to conservatives' response to Kavanaugh, believing that this is just an elaborate smear campaign propagated by the liberal media. Her opponents feel that these comments are reprehensible and have even demanded she withdraw her candidacy for Senator.

This is why it's important to follow the money. Companies can try to act all liberal and feel-good about social issues to lure customers but big companies all favor Republicans because that means less taxes and regulations on them.
