Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Brian Newman ft. Lady Gaga

Idk, technically it's really really good ESPECIALLY with how clear that last sustained "misunder..." is. Dang. Absolutely phenomenal.

That said, idk, I don't really like her *interpretation* of the song. It feels a little too showy and not as intimately sentimental and heartbroken (which we know she's capable of). I still maintain that Nina Simone nailed it best; there's a very clear balance between theatrics and earnestness. I think Gaga lacks some of the earnestness here. Brian's arrangement of it is very nice, and I like the simplicity of it (relatively)! I think everyone should hear San Pedro on the album as well. Really great track.

I just think Gaga did that thing she sometimes has a tendency to do where she oversings a song (taking it a bit too far into pop balladry territory for my taste as she has done with jazz standards before). Technically it's outstanding, just not the interpretation for me. I think if she'd brought a similar vocal color as she did to Lush Life it would have sat better with me.

Apart from the quality of the recording itself, if she had done it like Nina or Lana did y'all would be complaining that she did it just like them and didn't make it her own. Are y'all ever happy with what she does? Additionally, she may have not resonated with this song but because her friend, Brian, and his band loved it she may have lent her voice to whatever song they wanted on their album as a friend. We don't know what went on behind the scenes or how long they worked on it.

Anyways, she sang the hell out of it and I really enjoy it. I like it better than most songs on C2C - it carries more weight. It sits besides Lush Life for me.

I am agreeing with those of you that mentioned the vocals seem a little... off? I just listened 3x through. I don't think I'm a fan of it. Currently listening to Lana's version on Honeymoon - absolutely love her rendition! Dare I say it might be one of my top 3 songs Honeymoon?? Luckily, this new track by Gaga is a feature instead of her own. Just my thoughts..

It sounds like they might have slowed her vocals down & may had recorded it faster originally.  That's what that "strange" sound on the vocals are you might notice.  A few songs I know of have this sound quality on the vocals, especially the songs "American" & "Love" by Lana Del Rey.

can someone edit it and find out?

I don’t think it had to be identical to theirs (never heard Lana’s version), but like I said, I think it leaned a bit too hard into showing “hey look I can sing!!!” rather than honestly, truly serving the song itself. That’s what makes Nina’s special for me. It serves the song more than giving her a spot to show her technical skill. And where very few modern singers are good at emoting well in their music, Gaga is and so the relative lack of that (imo) is where this rendition falls short. It’s technically great, but she’s given more heartfelt covers before. Your Song, for instance, traces Elton’s version quite a bit but her vocals outclass his and her passion sells it in a new way. I didn’t find myself hearing the song in some new way here.

I think there's nothing wrong with Gaga's delivery. It's just her flourish jazz style here. Very close to C2C.

But wheras C2C provides a friendly vocal mix, there's a problem here in DLMBM :

Trumpet and upright bass sound great but Gaga's voice texture is thin, bland and much to dry. The work might be done by someone who's better at taking great acoustic jazz instruments than voices. The mic choice might be a problem too (ribbon ?).

Otoh, Newman's is obviously the star here. The trumpet sound has a full creamy medium freq body. In comparison, Gaga's voice sounds stripped out of it's natural mid range power. Even out of phase. Cornered. By choice ? She's only a guest after all.

Yeah, compared to ASIB, the voice mix here sounds really meh...

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

Some of y’all must have ear infections. She’s never sounded better and those last two minutes are legendary.

And it works well on some songs and not others. For instance: Anything Goes and They All Laughed? Hell, even ICGYABL? Great. It works very well. Nature Boy it would not have and she exhibited the forethought to what serves that song best and largely restrained herself.

Being a good vocalist is a lot more than just belting it and showing off because you can. It’s about communicating something through your performance. What *exactly* was communicated in this rendition of the song compared to, say, Bang Bang or Lush Life? Not a whole lot. It felt, to me, like she didn’t study the song very much and just came in and put flourishes on it to mask that rather than use the flourishes to specific effect like she does on INLA or even her own songs like Hey Girl, Speechless, etc.

It’s chill. I love Gaga and her voice. She doesn’t need to be Mariah Carrey.
