Roma's path to Oscar victory is more difficult than you'd think given the critical acclaim and Cuaron's involvement.

For one thing, the Academy has been very resistant towards Netflix in general. Netflix is working overtime to blow past that by giving the film a bigger (by their standards) theatrical release before it hits the streaming service, but it's too early to tell whether that's enough to win over the Academy. (Additionally: I think it's only playing in 3 or 4 major cities in North America.) And from everything I have read from critics and experts on Oscar campaigns, Roma is a movie that needs to be seen in a theater to be appreciated fully. Even with the theatrical run, MOST people are still going to watch it on Netflix.

That's problematic because it's a 3-hour movie in a foreign language with no movie stars in it. Will people actually watch it, or will they be on their phones the whole time? Will they turn it off after 30 minutes or an hour because apparently it's somewhat slow? There are even some critics who have said the film is kind of cold and emotionally distant even though they like it overall. That's a tough prospect. Add in the fact that Netflix doesn't release viewership info, so no one can default to box office numbers to support the idea that a lot of people saw/liked it.

I can see it winning Best Director, but Best Picture? It could happen, but that's an uphill battle.

That’s the same exact reason why Netflix is giving it a limited release in theaters so that way there’s no confusion... it will be realized in theaters November 21   and to stream on Netflix December 14

The criticism you’re giving is just because is a foreign movie? Watch this change that perspective

Pan’s Labyrinth was a foreign movie with no movie stars, long as well and it won big at the Oscars :vegas:

I think everyone here would take BA over BP any day.  I don’t know if Gaga would even be eligible to go up on stage if ASIB won BP as she isn’t a producer, but I’m sure they would let her go up but still...

Acclaim isn't all it takes to win though.

Also roma is a mexican movie right? So it has a barrier on oscar as well because of that.

Not saying it doesn't deserve just saying is not that simple.

I don’t get this... What about it being Mexian movie is a problem? :cryga:

Lmao is a Mexican American film. Filmed by a Mexican person for an American market (Netflix)

The racism or ignorance sometimes.

Therefore is eligible as a foreign film

It'll be difficult for Roma to win BP. Roma also has been selected as Mexico's entry for Best Foreign Language which also hurt it's chances for BP.

Since 1945 "No foreign language film has been a recipient of an Academy Award for Best Picture, although eight foreign language films have been nominees for the award."

If Roma wins, then history has been made.

Uh, yes, that is basically what I said. But it's still a limited release. That is what qualifies it for the Oscars in the first place (all nominees have to meet a minimum screening/limited theatrical release requirement to be considered). Netflix has made a compromise (this "expanded" theatrical release) in order to curry favor with the Academy and give the film a better shot at the Oscars, but we don't know if it will actually work. How many people are actually going to see it in theaters? It's only playing in a handful of cities for a couple of weeks. And everyone knows they can wait three weeks and watch it for free on Netflix if they want.

*I* don't have a problem with foreign films. I love them, and watch them all the time. But does the average person choose to put on a 3-hour, black and white, foreign film with no movie stars in their own home and actually watch the whole thing?

"Pan's Labyrinth" did not win Best Picture. It didn't win any of the major awards it was nominated for. It didn't even win Best Foreign Film. It only picked up a few in smaller technical/craft categories. And it was a more accessible movie!

In fact, NO foreign language film has ever won Best Picture, as far as I can recall. I'm not saying that's right or good, but it is a fact.

But Roma can only win best foreign film

Everything was made and produced in Mexico, + it was submitted for that category

I doesn’t matter if the film sales tickets lmao it just has to be released to be nominated. At this point Netflix can care less if sales 3 tickets at the box office, they’re just pushing it to the Oscars. And yes no foreign film has ever won BP but is getting close every year. We might be surprised this year :vegas:

Just like there was no musical to win BP and Chicago changed that

So musicals can only win the musical category?

Guys please read how The Academy works.

All films that get nominated is eligible to be picked for BP, musicals, foreign films, animated films, from there they choose who is entering the category (usually four films) depending on which one gets higher votes

An absolute masterpiece of a film

I honestly was not expecting ASIB to win best picture even though it is an amazing film with critical acclaim. I’m not sure why. But I can’t see Roma winning either. So I guess its really a toss up. I’m more concerned with the technical categories with Roma in the mix. I think it is more likely to snag Oscars away from ASIB in those technical categories than in the best picture one.

Roma will be nominated in Best Foreign Language Film, so no competition for BP.
