Sometimes we make jokes that we think are fine but others don't appreciate. This one was way off the mark and people (including me) are justifiably upset as a result. I hope you use this as a learning opportunity. It's not personal; it just seemed really irrelevant and callous to say that even if you intended it as a "stupid joke."
