The Spotify charts updated this afternoon with the official second day numbers. And they were indeed bigger than Arianas first day. See below for a better explanation:

This puts Ariana at both #1 in the US and Globally in terms of biggest streams in a 24 hour period. 

Mariah was previously #1 globally with 8m streams for AIWFCIY

Taylor had the #1 in US for LWYMMD, which amassed around 3.7m streams in its first day. 

Perhaps what is most impressive about Ariana beating Taylor, is that she done it on her second day. On her first day, she narrowly missed out. Making “thank u, next” occupy the #1 and #3 spot of most streamed female song in a 24hr period in the USmy

Not everyone would be checking in on a song on the first day? A second day increase isn't really outrageous - news outlets would be covering it, emphasizing on how she named her exes in the song (and, as bad as it may sound, it includes Mac Miller, which is still kind of a big deal) the SNL-Pete stunt etc. and people would be curious and listen in. I say at least give it a week - if it's still going strong, then the people are really relating to what Ariana's conveying and it's good for her. But as of now, I really think the outrageous numbers are because of the controversies attached to the song.

So the record is for the most streams in 24 hours but not debut per se (which would be the next 24 hours after the release).
