And how exactly does this rating help now? You wanna tell me those teens wouldn't have watched the movie if they knew beforehand that it's rated "M"?

It was honestly foreshadowed in the first 10 minutes of the film, people are too sensitive these days.

I'm starting to wonder if people are now just complaining about ANYTHING that makes them uncomfortable.  His suicide is supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, most films have scenes that are supposed to make you feel uncomfortable.  If you're going to see an adult film, you know that rating is there for a reason so you should expect some challenging themes in there.

Y'all are acting like this is such a huge deal. Why does it offend YOU so much? Genuinely why? I do feel that most people should come into the movie with some degree of knowledge as to what the content of the movie is but listen - not everyone gives that many f*cks to know about every iteration of ASIB, some people saw a cute trailer for a movie and just wanted to watch it. It IS very triggering and that doesn't mean we have to make it more "PC" or change it at all, it IS useful to have a simple warning for those who do need it. It doesn't need to be a "WARNING THIS HAS SUICIDE IN IT" flashing on the screen before the movie starts type of warning. All they did was give it an equivalent of an R rating. This is a good thing.

We've discussed the other day, i can't really understand how suicide impacts in NZ. But certainly that's not how you lead with this... I mean, this doesn't seem real.

And the suicide isn't explicit at all. Like the first movie you see the guy walking in the water. And if you see the sinopsis you'd know he struggles with addiction.. I understand though that the movie kinda seems like a romantic comedy, but in the trailer it's pretty obvious there's some major major drama going on.

Sorry it's just an excuse for throwing a tantrum. Maybe im really cold, i don't know... my uncle and grandfather were alcoholics and his brother killed himself. It's something runs in the family. A great friend of mine jumped in the train rails when he went oversears. I've tried myself with meds one time. to me it doesn't really affect seeing this kind of movies for some reason. I understand probably the mother of my friend, she would feel pain, and could actually write an email as a complaint towards how the movie is classified. Though a smart woman she is, she'd know the plot of a remake of such a classic movie. And even then surely would refrain herself from seeing certain kinds of movies. Which isn't really her.

Oh well too much drama, but hey NZ is on the other side of the world, to each they're own

Yeah, but the OP states that teenagers (with mental health problems, no access to the previous films and obviously not knowing of the plotline due to their young age) were triggered and had mental health episodes due to the wrong classification of the film. This is neither an attack on the film, Gaga or Bradley. This is just a f*ck up on behalf of the rating society of New Zealand.

I'm not shocked because this is GGD after all but tbh y'all are acting like the butthurt ones here

if the people affected by suicide and families of victims don't want to feel emotionally distressed from a trip to the cinema (when they probably want to escape their worries) then warning's of suicide need to be on films

grow up and have some empathy for others

Oh my bad, I didn't really read the article and completely misinterpreted it :ohno:

I guess living in Italy I am not used to these type of ratings, we only have "prohibited for people under 14/18" and ASIB is neither one.

New Zealand is one of the countries with Triple A STAR IS BORN smash. I can't believe this happened. Anyways, I hope the teens are alright. ASIB was that influential.

To give context as to why ASIB was reclassified in NZ... We have the worst suicide statistics in the OECD, and for decades, media outlets were almost-banned from even talking about suicide, as the general thought here was that if you talk about it, it'll lead to an increase in suicides. There's a lot of stigma around suicide, and a lot of people still think it's a very selfish act. It's still kind of taboo to even talk about suicide here; our Prime Minister talked about suicide in one of her first speeches as PM, and was heavily criticised (and praised too) for talking about it.

ASIB should probably have always been classified as R in NZ, so I'm glad they changed its classification.

I'm confused as to how ratings work in NZ, but it's not like it was promoted as a feel good PG film. Its a storyline that has been told 3 previous times with the ending pretty much being the same.

Here’s how our ratings work:

G - general audiences

PG - parental guidance recommended

M - for mature audiences

R16, R18 - legally restricted to people above the specified age. It is against the law to let anyone under the specified age watch the film under any circumstances.

In addition, each rating will have a description of the content that gives it the rating. ASIB is rated M, and while that part was not changed, the description was updated.

Honestly I was shocked when it only got an M rating, I’ve seen films with far less adult content that were restricted.
