Eraser 3/10

I don’t know why, but i always hate it when celebrities talk about how hard their lives are especially if these people are supposedly down to earth. Ego never wears well on Ed and this song is no exception :koons:

Castle On The Hill 9/10

An 80’s like power ballad about the beauty of being young. Good stuff. Make more songs like this Ed.

Dive 5/10

Cliche lyrics and by the number music make an average song. Also: what a weak riff is this? Why is it there? It doesn’t fit at all :saladga:

Shape Of You 0/10

orig

Perfect 1/10

AjarGlitteringAngora-size_restricted.gif

Galway Girl 7/10

Everything about this song should annoy me but for some reason, i still like it. It has Ed’s terrible speak rapping, a badly implemented fiddle and lyrics that are :green: but i can still groove to it.

Happier 6/10

The song is well written but the mediocre music and these „Heya“s hold this song back.

New Man -1/10

This song pisses me off! If someone wants to talk to you, you shouldn’t react like a pissy little arse. We don’t know what she did to you except for breaking up with you and you show no mercy in this song. This song is probably the worst song about a break up since Cry! Cry! Cry! by Johnny Cash. Stop being a bitter man baby Ed and stop with this terrible music :saladga: And what the hell are these stutters at the end supposed to mean?

Hearts Don’t Break Around Here 7/10

A nice change of perspective because most lovesongs always see the woman in this role. Now a man can feel safe in a relationship too. But the unimaginative music holds it back again. There is nothing new here, musically speaking.

What Do I Know? 2/10

Listen to Say Something by Justin Timberlake ft. Chris Stapleton. A song with way more substance and better music AND two great singers. If you want real political pop music go to the early P!nk records. Ed knows nothing which exactly my problem. If i don’t know anything about a topic i shut my mouth but Ed has to spout stupid and meaningless lyrics over boring music. Even Carrie ****ing Underwood has better political songs! Listen to „The Bullet“, „Love Wins “ or even „Kingdom“ they all have more substance than Ed shows in his entire discography.

How Would You Feel (Paean) 8/10

How sweet!

Supermarket Flowers 8/10

Interesting perspective and very poetic lyrics. Even the sparse piano works. But for some reason, i still feel like something is missing but i can’t point out what exactly makes it feel incomplete :laughga:

Final Verdict: 55/120 or 4.5/10

This album is abysmal but it is no Scorpion. Don’t listen to it. There’s one song (Castle On The Hill) that's worth anything you can forget about the rest of the album without regret. Skip it when possible or demand a refund when someone tries to force you to listen to it :huntyga:

Btw **** the Grammies!

Spoiler

This is not flamebait but an honest review like i did with all his other albums. If you want positivity you can read my other reviews but i can't do anything else but trash this album because it is just bad.

@Andreu sorry but i just can't be very positive about this album :laughga:

Ohhh noooo!!!! It's my favourite of his, although I still don0t find it a very solid album. Let's go step by step.

1. I agree, Eraser is very bad. But I don't think it is because of the lyrics: I can't stand the music.

2. Agree that Castle On The Hill is a good song but it's not my favourite.

3. Although they have been extremely overplayed and that makes them annoying sometimes, I think that both Perfect and SOY are good songs. Maybe they didn't deserve to be so big, but they're not bad. I really much prefer the acoustic version of SOY.

4. I like Galway Girl and Happier a lot, better than COTH.

5. HOW DARE YOUUUUU!!!!!! I love New Man!!!! The music is good and the ironic lyrics are very well put. My favourite song on the album and in ED's discography.

6.Regarding the ballads of the second half of the album, I feel like they could be all good individually, but so many songs like those one after the other makes them uninteresting.

7. where are the bonus tracks henny!!!!! :grr:

I'm sorry but i don't hear irony. There's only bitterness and there are better examples. "You Oughtta Know" by Alanis Morissette is a song that is so bitter and i still love it to pieces.

Which one? SOY is not my type of song at all. (My opinion)

I have a love hate relationship with Barcelona lmao, because I love the music but there are some stereotypes (besides the cring that a song named like that produces on me). I pretend it's called dancing in the streets when I sing it on the guitar.

Regarding new man, I see it all as a satire: He, as someone that is not the most cool or attractive person, is in a position in which he should feel like he has to try to be the "cool guy". However, he laughs at the things that this kind of person have to do be "cool" but that at the same time make no sense.

"She wears sunglasses indoors, at winter at nighttime" Is clearly irony, and the music remarks it as well

and the cherry on top of the satire is that the girl that used to be with Ed but now's with the cool guy, so in the eyes of most people "she upgraded" still wants him back.

i feel like I worded it up terribly, but I hope you get my point

I understand your point very well and wouldn't it be for the lyrics i would definitely like the song more because the music is really good. I can't help it but i like break up song more when the singer is completely beaten down (Habits (Stay High) by Tove Lo; You Were Meant For Me by Jewel; Backsliding by Carrie Underwood) or triumphant (I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor; I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton; Rolling In The Deep by Adele). It's not often that i like a bitter break up song and the Alanis Morissette one is a clear exception. It's just my taste that prevents me from liking the song. But maybe i can change my perspective with a little time so i don't hate "New Man" that much anymore.
