I disagree only because both of these films were also carried by vehicles greater than their chart positions: movies and the Oscars. Not saying anything will happen, but let's revisit this at the time of the Oscars after this song is likely performed. It's also worth noting that for a long time Titanic was the #1 movie of all time which speaks to the relevance on its movie in determining its legendary status.

tbh, INLA may be a similar ballad to IWALY and MHWGO, but I can't exactly see the song achieving what its predecessors did. Mainly because both songs were highly popular and reigned on the charts and they both were the topic of discussion in pop culture representing the movies at the same time.

Like it or not, Shallow has become that for ASIB. Everyone relates to this song when they think of ASIB and it completely overshadowed INLA. Had streaming not being the force it is, Shallow will most definitely reigned at #1 on Billboard charts for the massive success it is when it comes to actual sales.

I wonder if it's also worth exploring the length of the songs in determining their commercial strength as ballads. IWLNA strongly falls within the lineage of power ballads that have come before it, but it's long. Shallow is a very very short song any way you look at it so it is more digestible in the consumer market especially these days. So I wonder if this very modern trend of shorter attention spans is what works in its favor. It doesn't waste time; it is quick and builds to power with a strong, momentous performance. Contrast that to IWLNA which takes awhile to build.

We're in a different era now. Today's generation don't appreciate songs like INLA anymore unlike the way previous generations enjoyed IWALY and MHWGO. Today's generation prefer a modern sound imo...

I don't reeeeally agree with that. Adele's "Hello" was gigantic, for example. I'm not saying it's as good a song as IWALY, but my point is that a big, well-sung ballad can still do well. It just depends on a lot of factors like who's singing it, whether it gets promoted well, what its competition is at the time it's released, etc.

And honestly the ASIB songs are all doing pretty well given there haven't been any live performances highlighting one of the songs. We should revisit after the Oscars, assuming one of them gets performed. It could get a second life a la Million Reasons after the Superbowl.

They're not in the same league because IWALY and MHWGO are literally so much better than INLA. Saying they weren't written by the singer doesn't mean ANYTHING

Of course it's not in the same league as those 2 huge classics! Even if she performs it at the Oscars and it gets a huge boost and peaks in the top 5 on the Hot 100, that won't bring it any closer to these 2 monsters.

It's SHALLOW.MP3.

It's not the subject, it's the way it's treated. So superficial and empty.

As you said, IWALY and MHWGO are great representations of 90s power ballads. They capture that particular era.

INLA is just a rip off of those songs. We're not in the 90s anymore, our "classic" songs shouldn't sound the same as they did 20 years ago. They should bring something fresh that sounds uniquely "2010s".

I mean it's nowhere near as iconic or legendary.
It hasn't been released to radio so I can't really say whether it's a 'successful single' but I doubt it would go top 10 on the hot 100.

The person who made the post in here about INLA not having a catchy melody hits the biggest issue with the song itself. Granted the song is beautifully composed and written - but the one thing that song is missing to really make it POP on radio is that catchy hook/melody. The song simply does not have that ear-wormy effect that the song Shallow or even ARUTW has which is unfortunate, but that still doesn't discredit it from being an amazing song - it'll just be an amazing song that doesn't have the chart success that IWALY and MHWGO had

I was giving an example by the way. It wasn't supposed to be literal. Like, LoveGame is about that too and I love that song
