River 121,116
Sooo I watched the movie yesterday and here what I have to say. Overall it's a very nice movie, not really spectacular but for the 4th version of this movie, it's doing more than justice and I felt that it was more serious than the others. The music was wonderful, the live vocals were amazing and the story was in between a fairytale and a tragedy. Now... the things I didn't like. ok the editing was not really good, it really disturbed me sometimes because it was very obvious, they cut too many songs for example or some scenes were longer than needed and could have been cut.. in general, the movie was a bit too long and I didn't see any justification for that, it could have been shortened a bit. The plot - there were some fails here, idk but I didn't really feel the star getting born, I didn't see Ally rise to fame too much.. like honestly, I didn't see any reason to give her a Grammy, what did she do to earn it? also, the death of Jack was not obvious at all, the scene with the dog was emotional but you didn't really see him hanging there.. my husband had to ask me later "so he's dead right?" it was confusing.. if I didn't read spoilers I probably would ask the same thing.. it's THE important scene of the movie but was poorly delivered to the audience. Also the brother's relationship story was too short.. it didn't develop too much.. they had like 4 scenes?? Also, I actually felt that the story focused more on Jack and Ally was a supporting character sometimes, like it's should have been named A Star Is Falling. Gaga's acting - she was really amazing here but not an Oscar worthy performance.. I must be honest here.. it's really sad for me to say that actually.. but she's not there yet... I think the movie will win only the Best Original Song actually. Sooo to sum it up, I give the movie 7/10 I'm more than happy to hear a feedback, are you agree or disagree, as long as it respectful. Mr Judas 4,106
Tbh I could have handled an easy 20 minutes extra in the movie to let the movie really breathe deep. I agree with the editing being a bit choppy (but only in the second half) and also we didn't really see Ally's star shine. Like the "superstar fame" part was not very obvious. I also diagree about the death scene. Like he had a noose in his hand fashioned out of his belt, like??? How is that not obvious enough??? - Tbh shots of him hanging would have been too much. Such things Tigger too much and must include a warning. The end is tragic enough without a gruesome hanging scene.
Ashley 9,846
I didn't read spoilers (or watch any of the older adaptions, so I didn't know he died at all) and I thought his suicide was pretty obvious. You can tell what he's about to do and clearly see him hanging in the window.
Monster7 5,697
There's one moment in which the camera stairs for a good 10 seconds at a gate. The dog is in front of it and you can see through the door's upper windows Jackson's legs and feet like he was floating
SJAG 1,597
Well.. I have to disagree, I feel the movie was too short, not too long, the plot was actually developing REALLY fast, and the continuous cuts annoyed me a little bit and kinda ruined the experience, they didn't even give me enough time to feel something, you know? Luke I didn't feel any emotion at all when they got Madrid because it all happened so fast. I'm MAD that a lot of scene were cut out, "Is that alright?" deserved its moment in the movie along the other amazing songs from the soundtrack. I agree on the critique to the multiple pointless moments... they literally made the scene with the Drag Queen getting her fake boobs signed last longer than the wedding one (Yes I'm mentioning it again.. I'm still angry).
Doncho 27,241
I agree some parts were a bit long. But I have to disagree that Ally is a supporting character for Jackson. Even though he is the center of the movie, Ally shines on her own and keeps the plot going. I personally had a hard time seeing Ally without thinking its Gaga, but thats because Im a fan Dont forget that music is part of acting, so thats why most critics are surprised with Gaga s performance. I think she will definitely be nominated for her acting. As for a win... who knows... its possible... but clearly her best shot is for Best Song. Oh and Bradley HAS to win best actor. Pablo 8,128
Were we watching the same movie? Jacks scene was very clear, it was done it a tastful wat without being too in your face. Don't visit my profile
Poker 3,767
I felt the same the first time I watched it. The second time I watched it I changed my mind completely. Now I think the movie is almost perfect. There are some things that could have been done differently but what is there is so good. I don't know about awards and acting. But Gaga deserves whatever award for that final shot. Kindness rules all.
Ada 1,665
I'm curious about your opinion on Gaga's acting. Why do you think she's not there yet and what should she improve on?
Bio 23,538
It was definitely too long. First half happens very quickly and second half is kind of dragged. About the focus on Jackson: what people need to understand here is that the movie isn’t about fame. That story has been told too many times. “Poor girl who gets caught up in the Hollywood game” is done and tired. Bradley wanted to tell a story about love and sacrifice. He wanted us to really relate to these characters, their back story, what motivates them and their flaws. About Gaga’s acting: she was great for a first timer, she did a phenomenal job and I’m really proud of her. But if she gets the Oscar for BA it’s because of hype. There’s no way she did better than Glenn and Olivia or Rachel Weisz.

I went there as a Gaga fan and got out of the theater completely shocked at his acting. For a while, I couldn't really think of anything else. I know that the writing helped him a lot, because he has some great moments, but still he made me feel so much. The awards scene (amazing direction too) and when she visits him at that rehab center (ignoring the "we're both waiting for daddy" which made me cringe). He's incredible. She needs to work on her facial expressions, something that I noticed since AHS, they are very artificial and not "real" sometimes.. but for a first major movie, she did an amazing job, it's just she needs some tweaks here and there to make it really perfect to a level of a phenomenon acting. PlastiscGuy 21,779
I agree, the movie was too long and at the same time felt too short when it comes to important scenes to the plot, missing. I'm not sure what I would cut off, but I know I definitely would have liked to see more development in some relationships and in Ally actually becoming a superstar. PG. Acting is the hardest element for me to judge in a movie lmao, I only get impressed when I see really good or terrible acting. I didn't notice anything about her facial expressions. I did cringe at some point when she sings Shallow for Jackson but that's because she was making these Joanne faces and gestures that have always struck me as kind of fake lmao. Like she's trying so hard to say "I get it man, we're both so italian and hardcore and tough and serious"
