Lady Gaga first gave a hint about the song in 2012 at an Amsterdam show of the Born This Way Ball where she introduced herself to the audience as Mary Jane Holland which means that she was working on the song at that period. As she said in the track-by-track commentary of ARTPOP, when she was in Amsterdam, she called Madeon, the producer of the song, telling him she had ideas for the album and asked him to send her some material to choose for the song instrumental. She continues, the song gave her inspiration to dye her hair brown which is even mentioned in the first verse. She felt like the world owned her blondness and it wasn't hers anymore. After dying her hair, she went out into the city and had a good time and that gave her even more inspiration for writing the song. She continues stating that she created that alter-ego after smoking weed and getting drunk in clubs and it gave her comfort while being out, she felt like a normal person after a long time and that served as inspiration for the song's chorus.

Gaga's Commentary/Interviews:

Lyrics:

Lady of the ‘dam
Won’t be a slave to the blonde
Or the culture of the popular
She won’t, she won't
Sing at you I'll
Fly under radar tonight
Make deals with every devil in sight
I will, I will

'Cause I love, love, 'cause I love, love
You better than, you better than
My darkest sin
Russian hookers, and cheap gin

I think that I could be fine
If I could be Mary Jane Holland tonight
I think we'd have a good time
If you'd meet me and Mary Jane in Holland tonight

Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)
Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)

I don't like to boast
But our truffles are the most
Mad-magical in Amsterdam (she won't, she won't)
So if you have fear, Apollo sit on my lyre, and
Play hIm like a piano man (I will, I will)

'Cause I love, love, 'cause I love, love
You better than, you better than
My darkest sin
Russian hookers, and cheap gin

I think that I could be fine
If I could be Mary Jane Holland tonight
I think we'd have a good time
If you'd meet me and Mary Jane in Holland tonight

Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)
Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)

I know that mom and dad think I'm a mess
But it's alright, because
I am rich as piss
When I ignite
And put you in my mouth
The grass heats up my insides and my brunette starts to sprout
Introducing, ladies and gentleman, Mary Jane Holland

I think that I could be fine
If I could be Mary Jane Holland tonight
I think we'd have a good time
If you'd meet me and Mary Jane in Holland tonight

Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)
Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)

Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)
Mary, Jane, Holland (whoh-who)

Adventures of Mary Jane Holland

Did you know?

It is believed that the song 'Brooklyn Nights' was competing with "Mary Jane Holland" for track number twelve on ARTPOP. 'Brooklyn Nights' would later leak in 2014.

"I heard if you record Gaga snoring and play it backward it sounds like an act. 2 unreleased."

"Madeon recently answered the questions on how Mary Jane Holland was born which involved this song. First of all, Madeon had the instrumental in this (called Revenge) used in his some of his shows. His publisher sent it to someone who wrote a song to it, which is the one you hear here (Cant Beat the Machines). Madeon did not like it and it was never officially released but eventually leaked online anyways, as you see here! When he began working with Gaga, he played her the instrumental, she loved it, wrote the lyrics, recorded a guitar stem, and wrote in the bridge as well. Madeon loved her work. Thus, Mary Jane Holland was born."

Mary Jane Holland had new stems (bass, guitar, bells, fx) and overall the vocals synergized with the synth better. But I love CBTM! The bridge is really cool.

Any ARTPOP song being appreciated warms my heart.

I still remember when she revealed the title and tweeted this:

One of my favorites from ARTPOP, such an underrated album.
