Canadian radio stations have to play around 30% "Canadian content", which is more than just music made by Canadians. Liberty isn't a goal to reach anyway, some boundaries need to be set to reach an equilibrium. You can't just let a foreign company arrive, take your money and threaten to destroy an entire part of your economy. Netflix is making huge money from the European market and it's logical that they somehow re-invest some money in it. Without boundary, Netflix could just decide to only propose American shows. You're also talking about competition with your "if the content is good enough" comment but you seem to forget the difference of level between American and European industry. The competition is already pretty biaised by how huge american entertainment industry is. Opening the door to a monopoly is never the good solution. And finally this law is also a way to have a fair competition between old media (TV mainly) and those new services. There is a huge legal void for those new services because they are very recent and not included in the previous laws regulating the audiovisual industry. Ironic that they’re complaining about not enough European content when some of their most popular shows on Netflix are European.
