I can't really comment on the #METOO thing she talked about since I haven't seen the movie but I appreciate her non-stan review. It seems like she has a general pulse and affect for how the rest of the world will view this film overall - which is highly positive! I can't wait to see it tomorrow at 7pm

She sometimes comes off as someone who likes to be a contrarian, so I was ready to be annoyed, but I think her point about the story between a successful, famous older man and a younger woman without fame nor power can be looked at as iffy and as a romanticization of something more insidious because the power dynamic is super uneven, even though the Ally character is eventually besotted with him. That said, I don't think it will harm the movie, but I think she's correct in that will be what the more critical thinkpieces will be about in regards to the movie. The feminists on twitter really hated that makeup wipe story and don't like seeing Gaga and Bradley hold hands because it reads as paternalistic to them - even though I think neither of those things are a as a big of deal as they make it seem. He just wanted her to be realistically clean faced for a scene where she was just waking up in the morning, and them holding hands is just typical of co-stars promoting a movie IMO

For anyone who's seen the movie, I'm curious, do you agree with her faults? For example, I've never heard anyone say that the movie felt too long, and I certainly haven't heard anyone but her say that the music was just "okay."

If anything the movie felt a bit too fast-paced to me, every scene was edited within an inch of its life. I felt like some parts maybe could have used a bit more room to breathe (Ally's transition from nobody to megastar went by very quickly).

So I personally can't agree at all that it was too long - not one scene felt dragged out, boring or unnecessary.

How about when she said that this movie may make Gaga "look bad?" She said a lot in the beginning: Ally's character is almost made out to look out as the "bad guy."

This may be kinda spoiler-y so if you could try and answer that with as little spoilers as possible, that'd be great!

I was expecting '' Gaga will get Best Actress and Best Original Song'' but she forgot to say them.

Feeling sad...

I respect Grace and her review but the fact she said the music isn't great  and compared it to the 'the greatest showman' made me cringe so hard. They're two completely different films with different purposes, making a comparison just because they're technically classed as movie musicals is a poor analysis. 'A Star is Born' serves as more of a drama with music at the core of the film than a typical comedy/musical.

and the music is GREAT so I have no clue what she's talking about, but taste is subjective I guess. :huntyga:

Well actually I really don't understand her comments about Bradley being portrayed as a "Christ figure" - in the second half of the movie Jackson is villified. You're really made to feel uncomfortable by his jealousy - it's very subtle and realistic, but it's definitely there. And some of his actions really make you embarrassed for the characters.

There is one later scene where it seems like Gaga has betrayed him and become "too good for him", but it turns out to just be a kind of awkward conversation (yet another super believable moment in the film). I think Ally is definitely more of the innocent victim in the second half than made to "look bad".

I do agree with her though that the first half is stronger than the second. But that's just because the first half is so, so good.

I also agree about the music - the songs are good, but generic. Acoustic love ballads, followed by intentionally generic pop songs - they weren't trying to do anything spectacular or revolutionary. They were just writing solid songs that fit the story, and they do that well.

I just was pointing out her lack of understanding of feminity's complexity (especially when she says "women do not act like that", talking about SPOILER but not really spoiler Gaga's screaming scene in the bathroom) is common of dull white feminism

Totally agree with you. Her #MeToo comment looks like a big reach to me, and I would honestly take it more seriously if some others female critics had raised that issue, but apparently it's not the case.

And btw, she's highly praising Venom right now, and the film is being panned everywhere else. So, yes, I'm even judging her taste a little bit.

I agree with Grace about the #metoo movement and how the movie shows that ultimately, Ally had to sleep with Jackson to get a career and that Jackson wouldn't have helped Ally if he didn't plan a love story

I don't actually agree with that.... Jackson was clearly enamored with her both artistically and physically, and there was really no indication that his help was a condition to the romantic aspect.

i haven´t seen the movie but the description has been that she's been born to be on the stage and he gave her the chance, not by connections but by allowing her to believe in herself

so... i think that's a wrong perspective no? that metoo coment is forced

I did see some some people say it’s too long but there’s also some people that says they want to see more and it’s not enough (in a good way)

What are you even talking about? “White feminism” are you serious? Now you’re making it into a race thing as well? Last time I checked she is a woman & has lived the life & experiences of a woman & has every right to say whether or not she thinks women would go scream about a man in the bathroom & her opinion shouldn’t matter any less because of her race. Just stop.
