Lady Gaga is not a singer... she's two.

Hello Little Monsters... I'm back with another controversial thread so roll out your sleeves and prepare yourself to hit your keyboard. It's time to fight in the comment section.

lady_gaga_asib_arrival_9_24_2018_billboard_1548.jpgAs the title may suggest, I'm here today to talk about Lady Gaga's duality. Everyone can agree that "A Star is Born" has completely changed Gaga and I've seen people complaining about her "new" self, calling her "boring" and such.

Yesterday she released two songs, one off of the ASIB soundtrack, "Shallow", with Bradley Cooper, a country pop song with raw vocals and deep lyrics, and "I Want Your Love" featuring. CHIC, a catchy dance song. Just by listening to these two songs, you can notice the difference between Lady (acutally Ally in this case) and Gaga (she even starts IWYL by introducing her this way), which I'm gonna talk about later in this thread.

dfdf.pngBut FIRST, let's discuss a bit about her "changing" for ASIB by clarifying some things. Don't expect her to do someting controversial or over the top, she's promoting a movie she's in and as most actor and actress, she'll do plenty of interviews and go to an huge amout of events, just for that single reason. She's not going to talk about herself as a singer, but her as an actress, by answering questions ABOUT THE MOVIE. She has to bring people to cinemas to see her and Bradley, so of course he's always on her mouth and viceversa, and they keep complimenting each other (They look like they're ACTUALLY in love, I'm not saying their relationship is a marketing strategy, they're great friends).

ALSO, I don't get why you're surprised about her repeating herself so much. We're not new to this formula, she always says the same stuff over and over when promoting something, she usually does it when explaining the album and its concept and now she's doing it for the movie plot.

Lady_Gaga.jpgSO If you think she's cold, mechanic or too repetitive, you're probably right, but it's just because she has to. She has to clean her image in order to look "natural and presentable" (Making a positive impression, I mean), she did the exact same with "Cheek to Cheek" and "Joanne", being those two "personal and mature" projects. She's kinda anticipating her character: a common girl with a big dream, not a crazy pop singer who wears over the top costumes (Don't come for me, I obviously have a way better consideration of Gaga, but it's just to emphasize the idea).

Which leads to the point of the thread. Gaga's duality. Her name says it all: LADY / GAGA. She's slowly separating the two things.

raw_Imag222e.pngLADY being the mature and elegant version of herself. That's what Tony calls her, and she's using that name recently too, she's ok with Ellen and VOGUE calling her that. Once again, it's because she's promoting an elegant image (A similar style can be noticed when she attends important awards and events) which could appeal to people and bring them to see the movie. (Would adults take her seriously if she wears an insane outfit while interviewed?).

Even though she still has the Gaga vibe to her looks (Just watch how good she looks during red carpets), it's obvious she's going for a simple and classy appereance. Her VOGUE cover (which disappointed a lot of fans for being "basic") was the manifesto of this whole "rebranding her career" moment. (Magazines all around the world talk about A RE-BORN star)

GAGA, do I really have to explain it? It's basically what she's been since day one (and still secretly is). It's not been too much since the distorted-black-and-white-whatever criptic photoshoot, and that made people crazy. Well, people were referring her as GAGA again, the weird version of herself, the one which is not afraid of what she does, says OR WEARS, which doesn't answer to questions mechanicaly, the controversial one, the GENIUS.

raw_Imag222r.pngWe can probably state that she's been GAGA for the first half of her career and then became more LADY (Which could be cause she's becoming an adult, more mature and responsable, she's talking being a mother, engagement and such now). But she has been both versions of herself at the same too, I immediately think of the Super Bowl Halftime LII performance, which occured just recently (Just to prove she's still GAGA at heart).

In her SB performance she started with American classics just to perform her dance/pop hits moments later. That shows her abilty to switch between her "two characters", and how she's not just one thing, so I may be wrong by even saying "duality", when her personality is way more complex than that.

What do you think? Will she be more GAGA than LADY ever again? Let me know in the comment section.

I absolutely agree, love the post! I'm looking forward to seeing how she uses these two 'selves' in future eras.

She's probably just bipolar, chill

Her Vegas residency is doing her no good then, she has to change from GAGA to LADY quite often.

I remember Gaga saying that she is 'every icon' - and whilst it sounds a little bit pretentious, over the years, we have seen this to be very true.

She embodies a lot of the qualities of true pop greats (Michael Jackson, Madonna), and even artists like Britney Spears on a more superficial (yet still self-aware) way. At the same time, she is also the more avant-garde performer reflective of the likes of Bowie and Prince. Added to this, she also beckons back to 'classic' artists including, obviously, Tony Bennet and the like.

Throughout her career, she is continuing to prove that she truly is every icon. In the past two years, she has embodied the values of a true country/folky artist and is now 'becoming' a Hollywood legend with 'A Star is Born'.

You are right. Gaga is not one thing. She is infinite. Who knows who else or what else she will become. It is clear that Gaga is undefinable - musically, commercially and even on a human level, too. She is an enigma who seemingly morphs into different guises. Throughout it all, though, she holds close the core values that underpin her artistry - authenticity, character, kindness, commitment and talent. That is Lady Gaga.

I completely agree,

I wouldn’t say she is embracing it, more like performing it. She knows how to play the ‘actress’ and with every project we see a different side to her. I see this ‘Lady’ as Gaga’s Ziggy Stardust. :firega:

It’s like fans forget Sound of Music performance happened and when she was a man at VMAs. :green:

She also said on Jonathan Ross in 2009 that 'it's weird if they call me lady'.

This shows that she was clearly Gaga back then and she's okay with people calling her lady when she's Lady

I think for the next album the "crazy over the top" persona will be back. Everyone will go crazy bc now she finally changed ppls opinion about her.

Maybe even when the first ENIGMA show will start, bc she will have alot of time (2 months) to be lady (promote ASIB) until enigma.

She is winning again…. somehow she always stays here. I can’t stand it.
