Is Avril Having A Comeback Moment?

Avril is back with her new song "Head Above Water".

As we know, it's her first lead single for an album since 2013.

Her last era, unfortunately, flopped. The lead single "Here's to Never Growing Up" did peak at #20, but failed to have longevity. The follow-up singles only spent one to two weeks on the chart.

Here’s to Never Growing Up (2013)
1st Week: #52
2nd Week: #68
3rd Week: #66
4th Week: #60
5th Week: #30
6th Week: #31
7th Week: #35
8th Week: #34
9th Week: #34
10th Week: #20 - PEAK POSITION
11th Week: #29
12th Week: #35
13th Week: #59
14th Week: #78
15th Week: #94

Rock n Roll (2013)

(knocked out)

Let Me Go (2013)

2nd Week: #100

Fast forward to today and three days since the release of "Head Above Water", the song is still at #2 on iTunes in the US. And the lyric video is still #3 on trending on Youtube (US). Worldwide the video has 3.8 million views. On Spotify worldwide, the song has 2 million streams. The song has also been #1 on worldwide iTunes for 2 days straight.

The song will be sent to radio on October 8th. While Avril has been around for 16 years, she has something on her side that other veterans don't have...her age. Avril is only 33. She was 17 when she hit the mainstream. We all know radio is ageist. The cutoff seems to be around 35/36, that pop radio loses interest.

We need a veteran pop girl to do well and I'm pulling for Avril!

I hope so

Head above water is great. It wasn't what I expected but I love it anyway. I really can't wait to hear what the rest of her album sounds like.

This is her first dive into the streaming era of music. I don't think Radio plays as big of an impact as much as it did before. If the people love the song, they love it and this applies to new young fans who might have never heard an Avril song. I personally don't see the song being a SMASH if that's what you wanna call it, its a nice starter to resonate with her fanbase and share her struggles so perhaps future singles can put her back on the map.

I hope so, she deserves it. I kind of have the feeling this is her “Praying”. One of the last songs to be released before the Grammys deadline that has a strong message and has the chance to be part of the pop vocal performance nominees. I really hope they don’t ignore it.

I hope and also I think so... I’m not sure about streaming but anyways she’s doing great on ITunes at #2 US and #1 WW.

The song is really strong and very radio friendly IMO so I hope it gets the longevity that deserves because I do love her too :vegas:

Okay but this is an extreme case

I don't think we can say a three and a half months is a short run

Predictably, the streaming era is gonna let her down. Everything else could be on point but if streaming isn’t on her side then there really isn’t much hope unfortunately

I'm happy for her, but if her newfound success has longevity I hope she puts out good stuff to save today's pop music.
