ARTBOP 7,433
"Deglamorization is like catnip for the Academy" "Hollywood investing in promising newcomer" Spoiler Glenn Close not having any IS kind of mind boggling, but it's fun theorizing our Gagz could get a statue. There is a lot to be said about how Gaga's pop star status and the image around her could hurt her chances for Best Actress and all that is fair - but there is a possibility that this 'transformational' role could actually shift the opinions of voters. I also think her work on AHS and Golden Globe win, as well as her album with Tony/C2C era kind of set her up a little too in the same way Cher's previous roles set her up to be taken seriously and win Best Actress. Like my money will remain on Glenn Close winning The Oscar, and although there are some big names and great performances I don't think anyone else can beat her. With that said... I think Gaga is kind of the silent underdog that has a chance of doing it. I think her Golden Globe put her on people's radar, I think her SOM tribute impressed the academy, I think her campaigning for TIHTY helped some members warm up to her and laid the foundations for a more successful run this time. I also think the one advantage she has over Glenn (although I will admit she has plenty going against her) is that ASIB is going to be more popular than The Wife by a mile and Oscar voters are more likely to have watched the performance - although they should watch all movies. "the Academy is unfair", "it's all PR, "she bought it" etc I don't think any of these reads as a plausible excuse or rationalisation for why she might not win despite 'deserving it'. Judy didn't win because she was an alcoholic/addict who cost the studios time and money by showing up late and she burned relationships that way. I don't see that relating to Gaga... I actually think most people here recognise that this year Gaga isn't the favourite, don't expect her to win and are pretty happy with the current favourite Glenn Close taking the award home. Illuminati Freak 2,432
It would be an absolute huge accomplishment if GaGa even gets recognized. If she gets an Oscar nomination on her very first Hollywood film debut that in itself is huge for her and an extreme honor. I'm sure GaGa would feel that way. I feel like in some ways I already have This is an interesting video btw You can watch the previous versions and it won’t spoil anything tbh. The first one in 37 was about an aspiring actress who wanted to become a famous actress, she meets an actor who is really famous but is an alcholic and his career is in decline, she sort of becomes a rising star as he declines. The one with Judy garland switches it up and the story changes to a woman with a band who wants to be famous but she starts of as a singer but then is persuaded to go into film, she then goes into musicals and becomes an all singing all dancing star whilst the guys career declines. The Streisand one is rock n roll based and is the same story, she works in a bar and is an aspiring singer she meets a declining star and her career takes off; this one really focuses on the music side of things unlike the first and second one which incorporated acting this one focussed on music and rock n roll. So it’s really a simple story, a woman who isn’t successful in her craft and career meets a famous declining star who puts her in the right direction to get where she wants and she ends up flourishing whilst his declines. Every movie has been different and I think this one will have a different feel this one seems to be really authentically music based unlike the first two, it might be slightly mirrored to the Streisand one but that was rock n roll music where as this seems to be more country/ punk esq. its a timeless story actually and it’s interesting to watch the difference between the film. I don’t think it will spoil anything all of the films have been totally different in terms of direction and the telling of the story. The only thing consistent is that formula! 🙋🏼♂️

If Gaga loses or doesn't even get a nomination, it is most likely due to the pop star bias and a competitive year. The critics have already told us that her performance is great and worthy of a nomination. Some even feel worthy of a win.
Mr S 8,691
Also worth mentioning this is all true for the Grammy's too. Her label lost money during ARTPOP so it's no wonder she didn't receive any nominations. Other artists under that label are not going to vote for you if you lost the company millions of dollars. I don't think that it's because of "losing money" more that it was not "popular" as her first releases.
djBuffoon 12,125
Every year, there’s at least one major Oscar winner that looks completely bogus in hindsight. Crash for Best Picture? Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress? Roberto Benigni for Best Actor? What?? Perhaps Gaga will end up being truly deserving, but Close (who is brilliant) will win as a consolation prize for her decades of great work. Who knows? They are super good. And the actors did very good too. Especially Life is Beautiful, it is amazing film. Just because you are not into it, doesn't mean it is invalid Also, y'all better not put so much hope with Close winning Best Actress. Hollywood doesn't seem to like her that much. It's just an interesting video about Judy losing due to politics of the time, but we are in a completely different era and Gaga is in a different situation as a first time actress. Very few expect a win. OT: What Margot Robbie is doing a very similar process as Grace Kelly.

And if you look up most lists of “worst Oscar winners ever”, you may find the things I mentioned. Not saying that those are bad movies/performances (okay, Crash is pretty terrible), I’m saying they’re unworthy winners in comparison to the other nominees. I just saw The Wife and she's absolutely phenomenal. The only thing is that the movie is just great, if a little predictable, while she's outstanding. It's one of those movies where everything is contingent on the success of one, pivotal role. Thankfully, Close rises to that occasion with spades, and I hope they award her appropriately. There's one scene in particular that I was just enamored with and couldn't stop watching the screen. I encourage anyone even mildly interested to see it. What I mean is that from reading reviews I know there's certain moments that I will be expecting, for example there is some sort of (public) humiliation scene that Bradley's character inflicts upon Gaga's character, which happened in the previous films apparently. So, knowing that all the films follow essentially the same story, I don't want to watch the old films and then be able to predict what's about to happen when I watch the new one. You know what I mean? I want to watch the new film without knowing anything or expecting anything other than the basic premise (upcoming star meets old star).
